Exeter City v Mansfield Town

The Grecians' start the game making just the one change from Saturday with Ampadu replacing Barlow in the starting line up. Attacking the sparsely populated St James' Road End City start the game the slower of the two teams and Mansfield apply the early pressure winning the first corner of the game which Stuart Fraser easily claimed. Mansfield took the early advantage when a cross from the left wing was headed into the roof of the net by Liam Lawrence to make it one- nil to the Stags. City immediately got into the swing of things when they put together some neat passes on the left wing eventually setting Ampadu up for a strike which came off the head of a defender for a corner.  The resulting punch from Pilkington hit a red and white player and bounced back into the danger area causing a scramble that was eventually cleared. Just over a quarter of an hour gone and Roberts won a free kick on the right hand side of the edge of the box, up stepped Roscoe and forced a good stop from Pilkington.  In an open game City have built up a bit of momentum and are starting to create a few waves of attacks, testing the shaky looking Pilkington in the Mansfield goal. Roberts' pushed the ball from the centre of the Park out to Roscoe who in a similar position to last week at Scunthorpe tried his luck again, unfortunately skewing his shot embarrassingly wide.  Straight to the other end and Mansfield broke with Williamson luckily hitting the post and away the ball skidding to safety. City created a great bit of play with Roberts and Tomlinson linking up with Tomlinson breaking into the box, he took the ball past the keeper but luckily for Mansfield there was a defender on the line to clear the ball into touch. Half Time Exeter City 0-1 Mansfield Town Attacking the Cliff Bastin Stand City show they mean business with Ampadu cracking an effort just wide.  Mansfield created a good chance and had the ball in the back of the net but luckily the flag was up for offside.  Whitworth having an out of sorts game was then replaced by Burrows. Mark Burrows won City's first corner of the second half that was floated just over the head of Steve Flack.  Barlow then came on to replace Kwame Ampadu in the sixtieth minute.  Piper on the left wing crossed in and found the unmarked Lawrence sho shot wide. Mansfield always seem one step ahead and always have their next pass planned and are looking very determined and well organised and want the ball more than City.  From a corner the ball fell to Barlow who struck left footed to once again see his attempt cleared by the defence just in front of Pilkington. Seventy two minutes in and Breslan came on to replace the ineffective Steve Flack.  Breslan floated the ball onto Tomlinson whose first touch let him down slightly, running into Pilkington, Tomlinson was left on the floor in a heap with Pilkington jumping to his feet looking for the ball which was right next to Tomlinson. Into stoppage time and Cronin went in a bit hard on a couple of challenges and after a bit of a ruck and consulting with the reserve officials booked Cronin and Roscoe. Another miserable day for the Grecians who always looked off the pace and lost to a very well organised and prepared Mansfield team who should have scored more than the one, as you can see a dull game with not a lot to write about.
