David Wheeler and City confident ahead of Colchester United match

20 January 2017

Winger praises defence for recent good run

Exeter City winger David Wheeler says that the team look forward to every game.

City face fellow promotion hopefuls Colchester United tomorrow who are second in the form table, just behind the Grecians.

“Every week now we are looking forward to the game because we are really confident as a team and as a unit,” said Wheeler. “Individually we are putting in some really good performances.”

“On Saturday we showed that we can still do well and get good wins against teams that are in and around us,” added David. “They’re (Colchester) one of those teams.

“They’ll be a similar calibre to Grimsby and our defence managed to keep out Bogle who’s the top scorer in the league.”

The likes of Ollie Watkins and Wheeler himself have been praised for their performances and goals for the team but a strong defence has also been crucial to Exeter’s defensive record, conceding just one goal in their last five games.

“It’s certainly helped that we’ve had a consistent back four, back five including Christy, for the majority of the run,” David said. “That’s definitely a huge factor because that gives the forward players a lift and allows us to go and play our game more.

“All the while you feel like you can get a clean sheet, it takes the pressure off during the game because you know if you can get a goal, even if it’s in the second half, you’re confident you can win the game.”

The atmosphere around the club on the back of winning form is improving from the manager, through the players down to the tea ladies.

“When we are winning everything’s lifted,” said David. “Everyone’s spirits are lifted all around the club, not just in the changing rooms.

“All the staff and during training as well the spirits are lifted and the quality lifts and everything gets better when you’re winning so we want to keep that going as long as possible.

“The atmosphere of the whole place and the expectation is still the same, that we want to perform well at home. The mood seems to have changed a bit and you can see the players are more relaxed.

After missing out on game time near the beginning of the season, David is happy to be back playing in a team full of confidence looking for their fourth win in a row.

“I’m pleased with how things are going. After being out for a fair amount at the start of the season it’s really satisfying for me to come back in good form and help the team out. Yes, really pleased with that.”
