Ollie Watkins' strike voted as Exeter City's nomination for Mitre Goal of the Year award

20 February 2017

Winner against Plymouth Argyle wins the vote

Ollie Watkins’ goals against Devon rivals Plymouth Argyle last April has been voted as Exeter City’s nomination for the Mitre Goal of the Year award.

His fancy footwork and skilful stepover saw him ease past two Argyle players and unleash a long-range left-foot shot which found the top corner.

The English Football League recently launched a search to find the Mitre Goal of the Year for 2016. After gathering results from City fans, Ollie’s goal against Plymouth has been nominated.

Every team in Football League has to submit one goal from 2016 for their chance to win the prestigious EFL award.

After gathering 125 responses from the City fans, Ollie had an enormous 103 votes to his name (82 per cent) clearly scoring the fans’ favourite goal.

Runner up was Ryan Harley’s thunderbolt against Accrington with eight per cent.

Other nominations from the Grecians included Jake Taylor, who had two strikes up for the award with one against Hull City (1.6 per cent) and other against Barnet (5.6 per cent) and Lee Holmes’ curling attempt vs Cheltenham (2.4 per cent).

The EFL winner will be decided at the 2017 Football League Awards, April 9, 2017.
