Bergqvist to leave for Sweden

10 February 2014

Centre-half to move back to the continent

Exeter City have allowed Doug Bergqvist to leave the club on a free transfer in order to sign for Swedish club Östersunds FK on a two-year contract.

Bergqvist – who grew up in Sweden until the age of 10 – joined the Grecians during the summer and this season had featured on loan for Welling United in the Skrill Premier, who also covered the cost of his wages.  Despite picking up an injury in September, the defender made 20 appearances for the Wings and twice found the net.  He has now been recalled from Park View Road in order to facilitate his move to Sweden.

Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale said: “It is with great reluctance that we have allowed Doug to leave the club, but in our current circumstances we are not in a position to guarantee that we would be able to offer him a suitable contract beyond the current season.

“Therefore it would be difficult to stand in the way of this new opportunity for Dougie and we wish him well at his new club.  We are also grateful to him for all the hard work and commitment he has shown when he has trained with us, and to Welling United for giving him the opportunity to play regular competitive football.”
