New signing Cummins reflects on his competitive debut

Graham Cummins, the Grecians newest signing, made his competitive debut this afternoon in his sides 3-0 defeat away at Plymouth.

Although Cummins did not start for City, the striker entered the fray at half time with the visitors already trailing 2-0. When asked about making his first competitive appearance, the centre forward explained of his delight at being back on the field and playing in league games.

“I was happy to get my first competitive game...there is a massive difference in competitiveness in training and even fitness wise, so I’m raring to go forward now.”

He added: “my sharpness is not 100% there yet, as you would expect; but I was happy that the longer the game went on, the more sharpness I felt, and then the control came with it.”

While reflecting on today’s derby, Cummins was “disappointed not to win and not to score” and rued a missed opportunity late in half to get his name of the score sheet. He said:

“I feel that I probably should have scored the chance I had with my left leg, and it’s annoyed me, but hopefully we can improve next week.”

Cummins also praised the travelling fans, and the derby day atmosphere:

“It was a great atmosphere in the stadium and maybe if we’d slowed things down a bit we could have done more to silence the Plymouth crowd, but for us the Exeter fans were fantastic.

Grecians boss Paul Tisdale also complimented the forward on his match-day performance. He said: “Graham had a very encouraging first 45 minutes for us.”

“You can see that he’s a strong, athletic, mobile type of centre forward, who gets into good areas and onto things in the box, so we have to make sure we feed him as much as we did in the second half and he’ll be successful for us.”
