Danny: “A good game to start the season”

19 June 2013

Captain Coles looking forward to facing former club on opening day

Exeter City captain Danny Coles is raring to get started all over again in the 2013/14 season – and is looking forward to kicking off the campaign against his former club Bristol Rovers on Saturday 3rd August.

The centre-half feels that the Pirates – who were rejuvenated under John Ward last season – will be amongst those that will be setting the barometer in League 2 this season.  But he’s buoyed by the opportunity to kick the season off with a win against one of the clubs that are likely to lead the charge at the season’s end.

“It’s always great to play against your former team and it’ll be a really good game for us to start the season,” said Captain Coles.

“Bristol Rovers will be one of the contenders and pushing for promotion, so to play against them on the first day is a good way to start.  We’ll be looking to get the three points and go from there.

“For this division, they’ve got some strong players and they’ll probably add to that before the start of the season.  They’ll be one of the favourites with the bookies, so it’ll be a good test for us.  They beat us twice last season and didn’t deserve to, so we’ll be trying to put that right and give them a bit of payback.”

Colesy is also just pleased to see the fixtures down in black and white, so that he can begin thinking about where the team will be, and when.

Just like the fans, Danny admitted that he was drawn straight to the other local teams for the derby fixtures, and for when the chances would come to make amends for some disappointing results against local teams last year.

“You can start to look which games are around your birthday, Christmas and New Year – and also where we are on the last day,” continued Danny.  “And we’ve got an absolute mammoth journey on the last day of the season!  (Away to Hartlepool.)

“Obviously I also look out for the local derby games as well, as they’re massive games for the fans and games when we know the atmosphere is going to be fantastic.

“The results against local teams last season were disappointing, so it’s something we want to put right this year and we’ll be working hard to do just that.”
