Stopper hoping for winning display against Luton
Exeter City goalkeeper James Hamon is hopeful that the Grecians can keep piling the misery onto a Luton Town team that are desperately short on form when they meet at Kenilworth Road on Good Friday.The Hatters have lost eight of their last nine league fixtures – they topped the table in mid-November a loss last weekend in Northampton took them outside the play-off places for the first time since then.
Exeter, who are on a run of six games unbeaten, could go level on points with Luton on Saturday – though it would take an unlikely goal-swing for the Grecians to make up the goal-difference and go ahead.
However Hamon knows that the home side still won’t give anything away cheaply in the fixture.
“Their form hasn’t been that great – but it’s 90 minutes of football and it’s anybody’s game,” said Hamon.
“We’re going to go in prepared like we would for any other game and it is important that we don’t take anything for granted.
“Their form is terrible but they are just outside the play-offs and they are looking for the same thing as us.
“They are still above us, so we need to beat them – and they know they need to beat us as well. It’s basically a cup final for both teams.
“You have got to be careful when you go to teams like that. They are at home and they’re just outside the play-offs so they’ll be trying to impress their fans and play well, and turn that run around.
“They’re going to be up for it more than anyone and they have got to turn it around for their own good – but we’re going to go there and do what we do and play our own football, and that should be good enough to get three points.”
The trip to Kenilworth Road marks an especially busy period for Exeter; on Easter Monday City host sixth-placed Newport at St James Park, and then the following week sees trips on Saturday and Tuesday to Shrewsbury and Wycombe respectively.
The Guernseyman wants Exeter to secure six points over the Easter weekend to keep the play-off dreams alive – and he feels the squad is relishing having something to play for in the final month.
“This Easter period is massive for us – we’ve got two games that are like cup finals to us and we need to win them both,” he continued.
“Then we can have another look at the league table and see where we are after Monday afternoon.
“Every player wants to be competing for play-offs and trophies and championships. Luckily that’s what we’ve got here.
“We know what we’ve got to do – we’ve got to win the next two games, it’s as simple as that. It’s a great opportunity for us and a great situation to be in.”
