City man looks ahead to visiting the Globe Arena
Grecians midfielder Jimmy Keohane feels that City have shown both sides of the game in recent weeks and have prospered from it.City overcame league-leaders Wycombe Wanderers in midweek at St James Park – it was a game that required a lot of fortitude against a notoriously physical side, as well as showing their usual creative element.
The Grecians weren’t outmuscled by the Chairboys, and they weren’t outgunned either as goals from David Wheeler and Scot Bennett secured Exeter the win.
And now with a trip to Morecambe to come on Sunday afternoon, Jimmy feels that the team can hold their own when it comes to battling as well as playing football.
“Morecambe are always a physical team that get around you and try to disrupt your play, and we just need to play our own game and be combative as well as much as we need to be,” said Jimmy.
“That’s what we have to do, especially in this league. League 2 is going to be a big physical challenge for us – we’re not the biggest side but we do need to mix it up as well.
“We have done that in recent weeks – we’ve mixed it up and earned the right to play in games.
“We know the way they will play – they’ll be physical and in your face, but we just need to play our own game.”
A win at the Globe Arena would represent a sixth victory in eight League 2 fixtures, and keep Exeter moving up the table.
The Irishman is keen that Exeter are able to keep picking up results wherever possible in order to keep things ticking over.
He continued: “We’re in quite good form and we’ve won five out of seven – we just need to keep that going. There’s a good mood and we need to build momentum going into Sunday, and hopefully we’ll get another result.
“We need to keep putting in the performances and picking up points. That’s really how you build momentum. We have to keep doing the right things, keep concentrating and we should be alright.”
The Grecians are undefeated on the road in League 2 since losing by the odd goal to Northampton Town, and Jimmy credits the unity amongst the group as being a factor in that.
City had had a disappointing return from the first month of the season, but the win away at Cambridge United proved the catalyst for a turnaround in form.
“We’ve got a small squad and we all get along really well, so we look forward to the away trips,” Keohane said. “There’s always a good mood when we go away.
“It is a close group and a lot of us have chipped in with goals as well. We’re doing well as a team at the moment.
“We all had to pull in the same direction – we knew that if we picked up a few results it could turn quickly, which happened at the Cambridge game. We had three games in a week and picked up a couple of wins, which was quite a strong turning point in our season.”
