Grecians defender reacts to Under-21 Cup success

EXETER CITY DEFENDER JOSH READ described the Grecians' Under-21 Premier League Cup success over Peterborough United as the polar opposite to the challenges posed in the 6-0 success over Southend United in the first qualifying round.

The Grecians are in the pot for the competition's Round of 32 after Ollie Watkins' winner, and Read played his part in keeping a clean sheet at the other end, enjoying a battle with the Posh's Jonny Edwards throughout.

"It was a completely different game to the first round," Josh said. "It was good to have a bit more of a challenge, because against both Southend and then Plymouth Parkway in the St. Luke's Cup, we scored a few goals. This was a different game, and the boys did very well.

"The boys up front kept creating chances, and the Peterborough keeper pulled off a few good saves. With players like Ollie Watkins and Matt Jay up front, we always know we're going to create chances, and to have a player like Tom Nichols coming in as well, those are some great assets to have.

"Tonight was a lot more similar to a first-team game than the last round. It was more physical, big strikers, but it's good to play different types of teams. I enjoy having those kinds of battles with different kinds of strikers.

"Everyone's really positive now. We've had a really good season so far as a group within training and in all of our games. We've been scoring goals, and even today, we felt like we could have scored more. I feel that we can create chances and score goals against anyone. The mood is positive, and whoever we get in the next round, I'm sure that we'll give them a good go."
