Midfielder targeting a climb up the table
Ahead of Friday’s clash with Chesterfield at St James Park, midfielder Liam Sercombe says that the squad are looking back up the table and hoping to get back amongst the pack of clubs that are chasing promotion.
A win against the Spireites – who are currently sitting second – would pull the Grecians just four points behind them, as the half-way point of the season approaches.
The Sky Bet League 2 table is incredibly congested and tightly contested at the moment – the biggest margin between any positions is just two points, meaning that chasms still haven’t formed between places.
And Sercs is looking forward to pushing on against the Spireites under the floodlights on Friday – which he also hopes will mean a passionate crowd and a lively atmosphere.
“There’s still everything to play for – there’s so much time for us to get back amongst the automatic promotion places,” said Sercombe. “We’re only eight points off the top of the league, and a few wins will help us to get back up around there. Every team is beating everyone else so there’s so much chance for us.
“And I always prefer playing in evening games – I always feel like you have a lot more energy, and the atmosphere is usually a bit better at night games.
“Hopefully we’ll get in a good crowd on Friday evening to cheer us on, and hopefully we can get the three points and go on a winning run. I’m sure the supporters will be right behind us and make it a good atmosphere.”
A win against Chesterfield would also help to continue the unbeaten run, which currently stands at three games.
The latest result, a 3-2 win at Accrington, showed many sides of Exeter – such as their potency in attack, as well as their ability to knuckle down and defend manfully to resist a fight-back from Stanley.
“We’re happy with the last three results – we had two good draws before the Accrington win,” he continued. “We came from behind against Wycombe and Bury for the two draws and could have won either one of those.
“And it was important to get the win at Accrington in bad conditions – the wind and rain were crazy. So we’re confident going into the game – we’re creating a lot more chances now and we’ve done a lot of work on the training ground and we feel ready to get the three points.
“There were plenty of times in Accrington when we had to dig deep – they were getting a lot of crosses into the box and we defended really well, with two young centre-halves in Scot Bennett and Jordan Moore-Taylor. There were times when we might not have dug deep enough to hold on, but we did well and earned our win.”
