Midfielder lauds 150-strong following in South America
Exeter’s own Liam Sercombe praised the Grecian supporters that travelled in numbers across the Atlantic to watch their team play against Fluminense on Sunday.Over 150 City fans were at the Laranjeiras to witness a 0-0 draw on the eve of the Brazilian national side’s centenary, and the 24-year-old passed his compliments to the travellers.
“We have good away fans anyway – they always travel around England and come with numbers and make a good atmosphere for us,” said Liam.
“We knew our away fans would be top class and for them to come all this way to support us – I can’t really explain how to thank them. It was quality from them.”
Reflecting on the match, which saw the Grecians grow into the game, it was evident that it provided a different type of challenge to the one they are used to facing in Sky Bet League 2.
Sercombe felt that it was an enjoyable experience and one that the team relished having the privilege to be a part of.
“It was a good game – they were a good team, and as you’d expect they were fit, quick and strong and were good at keeping the ball,” he continued.
“It was a real test for us. They controlled the game for the first 15 minutes but then we came into the game a lot more and started to enjoy it, push forward and create chances. I think overall we could have won the game.
“We aren’t going to come up against teams like that in our league. In our league, there are bigger and stronger but less athletic people than compared to the Fluminense side.
“It was a different kind of football and it seemed a different sort of sport in a way. But we like different challenge and it was a good challenge to be part of.”
