Southampton Saints 4 Exeter City Ladies 2

22 October 2014

Grecian Ladies defeated in Hampshire

Exeter City Ladies fell to a first defeat in seven games at the hands of Southampton Saints in the FA Women’s Premier League South West Division 1.

It was always going to be a tough fixture against a Saints side that was also going well in the league.

The home side went ahead with just seven minutes played as an Exeter attack was broken up, allowing Southampton to counter down their left flank.  A cross was delivered with precision and rifled in at the far post.

Tash Knapman was the first to register a chance for the Grecians, midway through the first period.  Her shot was directed towards the near post but a fine stopped denied her the leveller.

However Knapman was the one to register the equaliser just past the half-hour mark – Catherine Wright’s free-kick from deep was nodded in by City’s top scorer.

The hosts retook the lead just over five minutes later – again it was a cross to the back post, this time from a corner, which allowed the Saints to restore the lead.

Carly Bray was introduced at half-time in place of the injured Helen Kukor as the team had to reshape.

And City were level for a second time before the hour-mark when Kirsty Caunter delivered a corner to the back post, allowing Vicky Barter to head in with power.

Southampton took the lead for a third time as the game approached the final 10 minutes, and picked off a fourth as the game entered stoppage time as City tried to level.
