Annual Varsity match – #TownVsGown
Wednesday evening marks the sixth annual Varsity match between Exeter City and the University of Exeter. As well as being an entertaining spectacle for both the football club and the university, the match serves as a fundraiser for the two clubs’ chosen charities.
The university raise money for the Cardiomyopathy Association (CMA), in memory of former player Mike Polden, who had dilated cardiomyopathy and died suddenly whilst running in 2001 at the age of 20. CMA provide information and support to families affected by cardiomyopathy nationwide.
The football club raise money for the Adam Stansfield Foundation (AS9) in memory of striker and fans’-favourite Adam Stansfield, who died after a short battle with bowel cancer in 2010 whilst still an Exeter City player. The #9 shirt has been retired posthumously. AS9 funds provisions for youth football in Devon, Herefordshire and Somerset.
Exeter City won last year’s event 3-0. Jacob Jagger Cane and Ollie Watkins scored for the Grecians after Andy Higgins had scored an own-goal for the university. A whopping crowd of 3,932 turned out to see the event and we’re expecting similar this year.
This year, we’ll be using the #TownVsGown hashtag on Twitter. If you’re coming to the game, tweets your photos and messages and get a mention on XpressionFM 87.7FM, the university radio station, who are covering the match.
Tickets are priced at £6 on the turnstiles for all age groups. The Flybe Stand and Big Bank will be open and all entry is through the Stadium Way entrance at the corner of the two stands.

All guests that are coming to St James Park for the Varsity match are reminded that pitch incursions are an offence in the eyes of the law (Football (Offences) Act 1991, section 4) and will not be tolerated.
We ask that all attendees should show respect for the groundstaff who have worked tirelessly to prepare the pitch, the players involved in the game, fellow spectators, and the charities which are benefitting from the match by staying off the playing area.
