Goalscorer analyses York draw
After Exeter City and York City’s clash at St James Park ended in parity, goalscorer David Wheeler expressed his frustration that the Grecians weren’t able to hold on to their lead.Wheeler’s goal, which game just eight minutes into the game as he rose highest to meet Matt Oakley’s delivery from deep, looked like it might have been enough to secure City’s first maximum fo the season.
However the Minstermen had other ideas. After being blunted by Exeter’s rearguard for a majority of the game, it was a set-piece that gave York their equaliser as Keith Lowe arrived to meet Luke Summerfield’s corner in the 80th minute.
And while he was pleased to get his first full League 2 game of the season – and to open his goalscoring account for 2014/15 – ultimately he was left unsatisfied with the result.
Wheeler said: “I’m pleased [to get a goal], and it was my first League start as well so I’m really chuffed to play the full 90 as well. On that, I’m really pleased. But I’m so frustrated with the end result.
“It’s frustrating because I felt like we deserved it and a lot of the team had really good games. The team as a collective was very organised and strong for most of the team, and it was just one set piece.
“I didn’t feel like they had too much of a threat for the whole game – defensively we had been really solid.
“It was a good delivery, but at the same time we set off to prevent goals from set pieces. Any team will say that one of the most frustrating ways to concede a goal is through a set piece – and so late on as well.”
