There's nothing like the threat of relegation to divide a football club, is there?
There are those who are staunchly positive, so sure that we'll stay up this season that not even the faintest whiff of panic can be detected around them. They are unshakeable in their belief that our squad is supremely talented, our manager is destined for greatness, and that our poor league position can be put down to nothing more than rotten luck.
Then there are the doom-mongers, the pessimists, broadcasting their assurances to anyone within earshot that the manager is incompetent, the players are rubbish, and that the 'suits' in the Boardroom are so shifty and devious in their running of the club that if you believe a word they say then you, sir, are a fool.
Well, I'd like to think that I'm perching somewhere in the middle. While I'm not convinced that our squad is as strong, both mentally and in terms of talent, as it could or indeed should be, I'm also sure that the players we have at our disposal are good enough to stay up. I base this on the fact that I've seen City play at least six sides this year who I would consider inferior to us, so by default they should be below us in May.
I'm also sure that, while our manager is not quite ready to be considered 'great', he is without doubt 'very good'. His record speaks for itself, and those fans whose glass is 'half full' are right to put their faith in him. It shouldn't be forgotten that he is in his thirties and still learning his trade, so we should be prepared to forgive him a mistake or two while he figures out the requirements of the job at this level, as obvious as they may seem to the thousands of 'experts' walking through the turnstiles every fortnight.
But things haven't been good recently, and I'm certain it's not just a severe case of bad luck. With this in mind, it's understandable that his ability, and that of his squad, has been called into question. We're missing something, of that there is no doubt, but what that 'something' is exactly is a matter of opinion. Is it confidence? Or talent? Or fight? Or a winger/goal-scorer/defensive midfielder/rock solid defender?
Perhaps we should have made some different signings? Perhaps the players we've got aren't pulling their weight? Perhaps it's an ugly combination of all these factors?
It's a matter of opinion and conjecture and, I guess, there are no definitive answers. So let's leave aside the questions and the opinions for a moment and, in our best Rafa Benitez voice, talk about facts.
Exeter City have 13 games remaining this season, including Saturday's game against Oldham Athletic. That's 39 points still to play for and almost 20 hours of football to play, over half of which will be at St James' Park. And we are only two points away from being out of the relegation zone. A win tomorrow and we'll most probably climb out of it. Two in a row and we're flying.
So why don't we, the divided fans of Exeter City Football Club, put all our differences aside for a couple of months and get behind our team? Arguments, complaints, criticisms and debates can wait until the summer. For now, for these crucial last two months of the season they are pointless, a total waste of time and energy.
Our players may or may not be good enough for this league. Our manager may or may not be all he's cracked up to be. But for the moment all of that is completely irrelevant, because for better or worse, they are all we've got. If we want to call ourselves Exeter City supporters then we need to do just that - support Exeter City. And what is most important is that we do this with as much passion, noise, colour and enthusiasm as we can muster because, whether we like it or not, they rely on us, and if our football club is to stay up this season then they will need us.
So, brothers and sisters, let's stop the bickering and the negativity. We've got a team to support.
