FANS BLOG: Looking Ahead To A Vital Week

Posted on: Tue 16 Mar 2010

George McLeod, Fan Blogger, 16th March

As I write this there are only three teams below Exeter City in the league. We currently lie in a disappointing 21st place which means we are four points from League One safety. Worrying times for some of us, whilst others are laughing off the possibility of relegation, with winnable games against Brizzle Rovers and Wycombe in the coming week. In my opinion (and maybe others too) these are two games in which I think we could, and maybe should, be taking four points from.

We will need to rely on players like Ryan Harley though, even if he isn't the love of my life as the majority of the crowd love to sing on a Saturday afternoon. For me, when he gives 110% he is our best player, without doubt. So I hope he gives his best performance, giving City the best chance possible tomorrow.

Hopefully Sercombe will be continuing his fine form tomorrow as well - I believe he can be a vital player for the remainder of the season. He's a player who has great, fresh, young legs, an eye for goal and a great desire to achieve the improbable.

Bristol Rovers will travel down to St James' Park tomorrow in front of, hopefully, a lively City crowd in full voice, looking to get a huge win against a team near us on the map fighting for a Play-Off spot.

I was at the game at Bristol last year earlier in the season and anyone that went to that game will agree with me when I say we completely dominated the game.

We played the ball beautifully at times, playing lovely one-two's, getting the crowd going, frustrating the opposition's fans. However, we lost 1-0 to a goal midway through the first half and after that (and after dominating the rest of the game) we struggled to convert that possession into chances and goals.

It makes me think, and hope, that we can dominate again tomorrow in front of a full and anticipating Exeter crowd. Maybe this time we can make that possession count and create chances, score goals and most importantly win the match.

Following the 'derby' we have a trip to Wycombe's Adams Park. Wycombe are a team who, of course, came up with us (just!) on the last game of the season last campaign. Just like us, they have struggled to adjust to life in the very difficult League One.

They are going to be incredibly desperate to get a win over us, and I think their fans will expect a win. As a City fan though, I think the same.

We should be beating our opposition when we travel down to Wycombe. I think I'll sit on the fence this game and say it'll be a draw. Hopefully I'm wrong. Hopefully we Grecian fans will get our deserved third away win this season.

As I only became a City fan during the 2005/06 season having moved to the area I have never seen City get relegated.

It also means I've seen more positives that negatives since becoming a season ticket holder - witnessing two promotions in just five seasons. With a bit of luck this run of success will continue. We all know we're capable of avoiding the drop because we're a team that, on our day, can trouble any team in the league - remember Leeds? After a tremendous, tireless and superb performance, we knocked them off their feet and they left St. James' Park empty handed in the rain, with the cheers of a blistering Exeter crowd ringing in their ears.

Finally, I hope those fans who have been booing the team and individuals in the past couple of games stop their strange, sour obsession with criticising our players and team and get behind the boys instead. We need everyone to be on our side, if we are to stay in League One.
