Player Of The Year - Your View

Posted on: Thu 27 May 2010

With just 48 hours until the deadline for Player of the Season votes (midday on Thursday) we decided to ask supporters why they made their selection and remind you just how you can get involved.

Below are some of the best responses we have had. Agree? Cast your vote below.

It's been fantastic to see some surprises this year where players from the Conference days, have stepped up to league one better than expected. Steve Tully, Richard Logan and Bertie Cozic all fit this category for me. George Friend has been immense since returning from Wolves too. His pace and strength teamed up with a new found confidence on the ball, has impressed me massively.

But my vote for player of the season goes to a player who is having one of the best seasons of his career at the age of 31. His finish at Stockport in injury time and his cool layoff to Logie at the back post was my favourite moment of the season, and provided a vital 3-1 away win. He has scored eight goals this campaign thanks to some quality finishing and has run more miles on the pitch than any other forward.

Yeovil fans describe him as "still having it" and Hereford fans keep an eye on his progress too.

My vote goes to Adam Stansfield: absolute pro and showing skill and talent this season like no other previously. Get well soon and let's see you at the Park next year scoring again.

My vote goes to, none other than Captain Fantastic himself, Matt Taylor. An absolute rock in the centre of our back 3, it's fantastic to see a good old fashioned defender who's not afraid to stick his head in where it hurts and puts his body on the line for the cause week after week. The nature of our pitch in this second half of the season has seen a lot of teams take the approach of putting a lot more crossing into our penalty area and taking the aerial route. Luckily for us we have a defender who I have rarely seen, beaten to the ball in the air.

His crowning glory (despite the unfortunate own goal) was in the televised match against Swindon where he typified so many footballing clichés rolled out for defenders like him. Man Mountain, Goliath, Rock etc, could all be applied to his performance in that game, and has me distinctly worried that our best kept secret may have been let out in full view of all watching managers. It's been his ability to turn out performances like this week after week, to the point where we almost take them for granted, that has made him my choice for Player of the Season. He has led by example and typifies the team ethic that Paul Tisdale wants to instil in the squad.

I had 3 on my short list; M Taylor; Duffy & Harley. A a very tough choice as all 3 have contributed greatly this year in keeping us within touching distance of safety; with 3 games to go. Harley has improved his overall game; and when partnered by Russell was able to get forward more; and scored some vital goals. Duffy although not the quickest of feet makes up for that with a quick mind and can read the game; and is invariably in a position to deal with any danger.

My vote however went for our rock at the back this season; our captain marvel who has lead by example; and has had some very dangerous attackers in his back pocket this season; IMO Taylor has adapted the best to the step up too L1; and I truly believe; if he was a few years younger; Taylor would have been snapped up by a higher league club in January.

MATT TAYLOR for me because he never seems to have a bad game and has been so consistent over this season.

Derek Taylor

My vote went to Steve Tully. It wasn't an easy choice as Matt Taylor and Richard Duffy were running him close in my book.

I chose Tulls because, at one time, he was regarded by many as an average BSP level player and, at best League Two.

In my opinion he has taken to League One like a duck to water and, whilst never an outstanding player technically, his energy, enthusiasm, commitment and loyalty shine through in every game and he is a great example to others.

On top of that he has managed the Exeter Ladies team to another promotion which is no mean feat itself.

Tully is a great all-round player in my view and one who always wears a smile.

If Matt Taylor doesn't get this award this season then there is something seriously wrong.

Scott Elston

Paul Jones, quite simply because after injury he has come back with some absolutely superb saves. He has had a huge amount of pressure on him this year, even more so in the second half of the season.

We have seen very few fumbles, and the kicking has vastly improved. Not only does this show his strength on the pitch, but also that he has been training hard to get so much better!

I think he has been fab! Well done Jones!

For me it has to be Duffy. I was not sure after 10 games or so but he has really shone through and produced some awesome displays for us. Superb in the air, comfortable with the ball at his feet and able to read the game with ease.

Duffy is a very vocal player, I like that, and is more than willing to unleash a tongue lashing on team mates who are not switched on. Always a threat in the opponents box from set plays, he has the energy to get up and back so as not to miss that crucially timed challenge. If there was a vacancy for the captains armband, Richard Duffy would be the number one candidate...

This year I'm looking for the player that has improved the most and will be a huge part of the team next season and that player is Liam Sercombe. He is going from strength to strength and I am sure he will be a fantastic player for years to come.

I voted Richard Duffy for the way he communicates with his other defenders, telling them where to go and what to do, and for the partnership that himself and Matty
Taylor have formed in recent months.

Voting for player of the season is one of the best parts of supporting any football team. It gives a clear message to the player who wins the award that he is highly thought of and valued at the club. My player of the season is without doubt Matt Taylor. Taylor has been solid as a rock this season and epitomises everything that is great about Exeter.

The determination he shows on the pitch, going in for challengers where most would shy away for fear of getting hurt screams out loud the passion he has when playing for Exeter. He is one of the few players who rarely have a 'bad' game, reliability being such an important part of the game. He has come so far considering he came with Paul Tisdale from Team Bath and has matched and gone beyond all expectations anyone at the club (minus Tisdale) had of him. He is a credit to the club, reflecting the manager's professionalism on and off the pitch and the sort of player you never want to see leave.

So what is so special about Richard Duffy that I believe that he is City's player of year for the 2009/10 season?

Firstly he is new to the squad and has had to fit in to a new style of play and play under a manager and coaching team that he previously had no association with.

Secondly is his commitment to the team, he is obviously hyped up for every single game. His passion for the game is also obvious, he never stops trying and plays his heart out.

I have seen him having a real ding dong with Jonesy on more than one occasion but he is also one of the first to go and pat Paul on the head when he's pulled off a good save.

Thirdly is how versatile he is. He will play almost anywhere and adapt to that position so quickly.

Duffs is also in my view and out and out team player, he puts himself about and gets in where it hurts to support his team mates.

He (like Tulls) is up and down the pitch like a greyhound, cutting out dangerous passes, making crucial tackles, laying off balls and setting up attacks. I think Duffs reads the game very well. Yes he has had 11 yellows (2 of which led to one red) but this only emphasises how committed he is to the cause. It is to his credit I believe that he declares that he will not change his style of play to avoid getting yellow cards. Typical! That would be compromise and Duffs doesn't do compromises.

I recall that in the second half against Carlisle at home, Steve Perryman was coaching Duffs and Scotty from the Stagecoach Stand and Duffs reaction was excellent he (with Scotty) played a major role in the comeback from 2-0 down to 2-2 before disaster struck in the final minutes.

Finally, there are players I would rather have on my side than playing against me. Duffs fits right into that category.

Fullsy, Kirky and I were talking the other day and all pretty much came to the same conclusion - Richard Duffy

We (the Kellow's team) really think he's come on in leaps and bounds towards the end of the season. Like Matt Taylor, he gives you that confidence that when the ball drops at his feet, you immediately get that feeling that all is good in the world and it will be dealt with in a calm and efficient manner. He's makes vital interceptions and pushes the ball forward with purpose and poise. He's really cemented a place in the team and in our eyes will be someone who will wear the captain's armband soon.
