The news that Steve Perryman has come out of hospital after his difficult illness over the last month or so is a great fillip to City fans. The work he has done for the club on the field and away from the playing side has been fantastic and hugely appreciated by many.
To hear that he was still working from his hospital bed and apparently was spotted at the friendly against Bath City just days after coming out of hospital is testament to how hard he works for the club and how much Exeter City means to him also.
No doubt the fans and club will put something together for him, but I thought, for a little bit of a twist I'd get some comments from some Spurs fans on one of their forums and post them on here in the hope someone will send this blog his way and he can be reminded just how highly regarded he is by the Premier League team. You'll have to excuse the bizarre usernames that come from Internet forums, but here's a selection of the best ones.
"The term legend gets mis-used far too much these days but it definitely applies to Steve Perryman. One of the true Tottenham all time greats.
Wish him well." - JamieSpur72
"Definite Spurs Legend. Hope he gets well soon." - jedimonkeyvincenoir
"My father is an Exeter fan (and a lapsed Tottenham fan, hence my allegiance!), and has emailed Steve Perryman on several occasions about the club, always receiving a friendly reply.
Best wishes from me for a speedy recovery." - FreundLegend
"Best wishes to SP - I saw him make his debut v Sunderland we lost 1-0 to a Mike England OG - but he looked the part straightaway and I loved watching him at spurs all those years
a true Tottenham legend" - Greaves_357
"Favourite Steve Perryman memory.....
Don't know if I remember all the details right...but it was at WHL towards the end of a season and we were facing Liverpool with a much weakened team. SP was about one of just a few of the regular first team playing that day.
We obviously weren't expecting much but incredibly went into a 2-0 lead. We knew that was never going to be enough but a third goal would really have put the cat among the pigeons....and SP nearly got one! I wouldn't call it a mazy dribble but he somehow managed to get through the whole Liverpool defence on a run that started from within his own half....and in the end I think he was just too knackered to deliver the shot with enough power to get that third goal.
Happy days" - Timmytour
"Get well soon Steve, I've met you once at a Jimmy Greaves evening, a true gent and legend.
P.S. the original Stevie P." - morse
"I used to live just down the road from Steve when he lived in Ickenham near Ruislip. Always had a minute to chat to people & he also had three sports shops in the area. One of life's true gentlemen, and whilst not the best player to have ever captained Spurs, his work rate, enthusiasm and loyalty are up there with the best.
My best wishes for a speedy recovery Steve" - geniusgreaves
"He is Tottenham Legend and was one of the best captains we have EVER had. Get well soon Stevie Boy." - Harry Redknapp and the Philosophers Moan
"Great news. Now there was a legend! When Stevey went up to lift the FA Cup, I was there!" - HodisGod
"Stevie is a good man and I've had the pleasure of meeting him on a number of occasions and various charity events and dinners.
He once told me a very funny story about Ossie Ardiles and a fire extinguisher which I'm afraid I can't share on here for numerous reasons.
All the best Steve and here's to a speedy recovery." - The Rt Hon David Peckham
