City Youth Reports - 21st November
We round up all the action from this weekend's Centre Of Excellence matches
Under 9's Swindon Town 0-7 Exeter City
City raced into a three goal lead in the first quarter with a hat trick from the impressive Jack Sparkes. Morgan Cullen added a fourth in the second period with brother Daniel Cullen making some great saves in goal. Three further goals in the third period from James Dodd, Alfie Edwards and James Doble were enough to settle the tie.
Will Dean gave an assured performance in the centre midfield while Cody Cox's confidant, positive approach to the game was outstanding.
Man of the Match - Cody Cox
Under 10's Exeter City 1-2 Swindon Town
A 'just about playable' pitch saw the young Grecians put on yet another brilliant display of football.
In difficult conditions Swindon knocked the ball long in an attempt to score and did through an unfortunate and bizarre incident when a young City player tackled an opponent in the box and the ball ended up in the goal.
Exeter kept passing well and finished off a great move when Connor Balment smashed home just before the break.
Another long kick by Swindon followed and the ball bounced into the Exeter goal purely down to the poor conditions.
Fantastic performances came from Mitch Thomas, Nathan Townsend and Owen Haslem. And on another day Exeter would have won comfortably.
Man of the match - Mitch Thomas
Under 11's Swindon Town 10-1 Exeter City
Exeter City's Under 11's found their first ever 11-a-side game on a full size pitch a challenging and different experience. The Exeter boys took a while to adapt, but were unfortunate to trail 1-0 after the first quarter & were unlucky not to score through two superb long range drives by Audi Campbell which were both well saved.
After three of the quarters Swindon lead 5-1, with Exeter scoring a well worked goal with Sam Phillips crossing for Josh Davey to stroke home.
The City lads tired in the final quarter conceding five goals, but they gained lots of experience from their first ever 11-a-side game, playing new formations for the first time.
Cam Hargreaves was Man Of The Match , working tirelessly in midfield breaking down Swindon attacks and setting up many of City's best moves going forward.
Man of the Match - Cam Hargreaves
Under 12's Exeter City 6-3 Swindon Town
Exeter produced their best performance of the season so far with some great attacking football and clinical finishing.
Nick Grimes gave City the lead early on after latching on to a Will Richards through ball. Grimes, who had a great match, went on to set up a further three goals. Ollie Jay scored an impressive hat-trick and Liam Carey scored two excellent strikes.
Man of the Match - Nick Grimes.
Under 13's Swindon Town 0-4 Exeter City
The U13's were on the wrong side of a 4-0 defeat in a hard fought game in very wet and windy conditions.
Under 14's Exeter City 2-0 Swindon Town
The adverse weather meant a switch of venue to the artificial pitch at Exeter University and City won the game with a goal in each period.
Josh Kite and Jordan Ford combined well at the heart of the defence to give Swindon little opportunity to break through. Aarron Denny and Sean Goss prompted well from midfield as City posed the greater threat, with Matt Jay a constant danger.
It was Jay's delivery into the box that Sean Goss hit resulting in a Swindon defender putting through his own goal to give City the lead at the interval. Several changes at half time did not disrupt City's control and Jake Chisholm doubled the lead from close range.
Efforts striking the post prevented City from building up a more dominant score line but a good all round team performance left them worthy winners.
Under 16's Exeter City 5-3 Swindon Town
Exeter started brightly and both teams did well in view of the weather conditions. It was an evenly fought match until the 45th minute when Matias Morgan scored from a cross.
In the second half Exeter upped the pace and extended their lead when Lewis Hilton, a City trialist, stabbed the ball in after a mélle in the box. Exeter went further ahead after a long kick from Paul Gibbins, and an indecision in the Swindon back four let Jamie Micklewright score in the 70th minute.
During this spell there were numerous changes from both teams. Swindon pulled two goals back in the 72nd and the 78th minute. A very eventful game Exeter scored again through Jacob Cane in the 80th minute but Swindon quickly replied and made it 4 - 3 just two minutes later
But in the 85th minute a dubious decision resulted in Exeter winning a penalty which Jamie Micklewright scored.
