One Goal Wonders

DES ANDERSON was one of the stars of the Exeter City team that won promotion for the first time in the club's history in 1963-64. Partnering long serving Arnold Mitchell and Keith Harvey in the half-back line, the side had one of the meanest defences in the Fourth Division, with only Gillingham conceding fewer goals that season.
Anderson was born in Templepatrick, Northern Ireland and was one of a number of Irish lads who made their way to St James' Park, signing for the Grecians from Glenavon in 1962.
He made his City debut in the opening match of the 1962-63 season when Grecians made a bad start losing 3-0 at home to local rivals Torquay United.
Anderson went on to make a total of 144 league appearances for Exeter, and his one goal scored came in the 4-1 home win over Grimsby Town in December 1964, as Adrian Thorne, Alan Banks and Dermot Curtis got the other goals.
For whatever reason, Anderson never really caught the eye of the City manager in 1965-66, despite the fact that he had been one of the most consistent players in the team in the promotion year. he was one of the first names on the team sheet at that time.
Released on a free transfer in the summer of 1966, Anderson moved to Chesterfield, but he only featured in eight league matches for them, and was again given a free transfer 12 months later, when he joined Matlock Town.
JOHN ANGUS was one of the many players who had his playing career interrupted by the Second World War. Nevertheless the Northumberland born half back still played 246 league matches for the Grecians between 1930 and 1949. This included a very successful period for Exeter City in the 1930s when they enjoyed good runs in the FA Cup and finished high up the table in the Third Division South,
Angus played for his local village team, Amble Welfare, before being signed by Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1928. He never made a breakthrough there though and went on to play for Wath Athletic and then Scunthorpe and Lindsey United, who were then a non-league club.
It was from the latter club that Exeter signed him in 1930, making his league debut at Norwich City in December 1930, a game that the Grecians won 2-1.
His only goal for the club came in a 2-2 draw at reading in March 1933. He continued to play for City after the War and was eventually released in 1949, when he signed for Sidmouth Town.
GEORGE APPLEYARD hailed from Rawmarsh in Yorkshire where he was born in 1900. he started his playing career as a centre-forward with Rotherham Forge, before moving to Rotherham Town and then Rotherham Athletic.
He joined Barnsley in 1923 and scored two goals for them in just four Football League appearances. He signed for the Grecians in the summer of 1924 and made his debut at Bristol City in September of that year, netting his only goal for the club in a 1-0 victory.
Appleyard only stayed at St James' Park for one season, when he made the short move to Torquay United. However, he was back in the Football League with Wrexham in season 1926-27 when he scored two goals for them in five appearances.
