Exeter City won on their travels for the first time since November as they put 10 man Yeovil to the sword at Huish Park.

Jamie Cureton was the star of the show and he fired City into the lead after 10 minutes latching onto Ryan Harley's pinpoint pass.

The game's flashpoint came as the first half drew to a close, Sam Williams seeing straight red for an off the ball incident where he seemed to aim a head butt at James Dunne.

Andy Walsh's effort fizzed into the corner of the net on 76 minutes drew the ten men level but the Grecians responded superbly and two minutes later substitute Jake Thomson' curled in a pinpoint cross from the right flank that Cureton lashed home.

And Harley added some gloss to the scoreline with a purler of a right-footed free-kick to send City into Round Two.

City boss Paul Tisdale made three changes from the side that went down 3-0 at The Matchroom Stadium on Saturday with Troy Archibald-Henville, Richard Duffy and Richard Logan coming in for David Noble, John O'Flynn and Rob Edwards while Steve Tully captained the side.

Noble picked up a slight knock in the dying stages on Saturday and wasn't risked for this match but City's number eight is expected to return to the squad for Saturday's visit of Charlton.

There was an impressive City turnout, so much so that the terrace behind the goal had to be opened just before kick off as the seating block was packed full of away fans. A minute's applause followed for Adam Stansfield and throughout the night both sets of fans were singing songs in tribute to Stanno.

Yeovil have suffered a slow start to their League One campaign but their early contributions showed no sign of this with Cameron Stewart, Welsh international Owain Tudur-Jones and Sam Williams all having half-chances.

But a devastating counter attack from City, orchestrated by Harley, saw the Grecians take the lead after 10 minutes. Troy won the ball in defence, like he did so many times during an impressive return to the side, and Harley pinged a superb lofted pass into the path of Cureton who controlled it before firing home his first goal since joining the club permanently last week.

The 35-year-old showed tremendous movement in the final third throughout and on the 20 minute mark his combination with Harley almost resulted in another goal. The ginger midfielder sent a quick free kick into the path of Cureton who stayed onside but his right footed effort was saved.

A great move four minutes later resulted in Sercombe sending a screaming effort just wide and at the other end Paul Jones saved well from Dean Bowditch's effort that flew through a crowded box after a free kick was rolled back to him.

Cureton has seemingly found the perfect foil in Logan and the pair both had chances in the minutes that followed.

Paul Jones' crossbar is probably still shaking from Paul Huntington's effort on 40 minutes. The defender smashed an effort off the woodwork from inside the box after the ball had pinged around.

Every player was taking this match very seriously and we saw how much they cared when they passionately debated the decision to award a free-kick for a foul by Troy on Adam Virgo. The resulting set-piece was wasted but as play was about to restart Williams earned himself a straight red and sparked a bit of a furore as he seemed to aim a headbutt at Dunne.

The resulting melee also saw Troy booked. The game had just sprung into life and both sides could cool down at the interval.

Terry Skiverton's side regrouped with 10 men and it was rarely obvious that they were a man light ,especially as they went forward without one of their centre-forwards.

Tudur-Jones's shot was just saved by Paul Jones before Tisdale withdrew Billy Jones, who had picked up a slight knock, and Troy and sent on Jake Thomson and Rob Edwards.

Thomson's chances for the first team have been limited since his summer move from Southampton but he put in a sparkling cameo here which began with a mazy run from the half-way line infront of the aware fans, all suitably impressed with his lightning pace.

City were going through a bit of a lull and Yeovil seemed to have things their own way for a while. In fact half the ground thought Bowditch's shot that hit the side netting had actually found a way past Paul Jones on 68 minutes.

At the other end City carved out their first real chance of the second half, Cureton and then Thomson having efforts blocked. Then a counter attack saw Logan race clear from Dunne's pass but on-loan keeper John Sullivan saved well and minutes later City's number 20 headed wide at the back post from Harley's ball.

The Grecians were made to pay for their missed chances when Walsh's low drive flew into the corner after City failed to clear a ball. But just two minutes later the City fans had a great view of their second goal.

Thomson scampered down the line and whipped in the perfect ball into the box for City's strike pair and it was Cureton who nipped infront of Logie to fire a low effort into the corner. The trio then celebrated in the corner with the travelling support and Thomson made some fans' nights as he handed out high-fives to delighted Grecians.

It was all City after Cureton's fine finish, Logie's close range header was well saved after a fine move that saw  him combine with Thomson and Cureton down the right hand flank.

Harley's daisy-cutter then flew inches wide on 87 minutes before he had the final say of a very enjoyable evening. Liam Sercombe was fouled and up stepped Harley to curl a stunning free kick into the top corner deep into injury time. An away win at last and one step closer to Wembley....

The draw for the next round will be made on Saturday live on Soccer AM.
