Exeter City were easily beaten by a rampant Gillingham side after putting in one of the worst performances of Paul Tisdale's reign.

It could have been more as a tepid City side never really threatened to come away from Kent with a share of the spoils.

Paul Tisdale made a few changes to his line-up that faced the MK Dons with Harley, Fleetwood, Jansson and Dunne all starting.

But Marcus Stewart's clumsy foul just five minutes into the match gave Simeon Jackson the chance to open the scoring from the spot in front of the away fans.

Debutant Oscar Jansson went the right way but the Canadian's penalty found its way past the Swede via his right hand post.

Stunned by yet another set back City looked to fight back but were pinned back for long stages in their own half and struggled to up the pedestrian tempo.

A string of corners for the home side followed but City survived and the midfield began to find their feet before the interval with Ryan Harley starting to threaten.

But whenever the Gills moved forward they looked extremely dangerous, Richard Duffy having to be on his guard on numerous occasions to keep out the pacey Gills frontline.

And on 33 minutes the Grecians got out of jail after the impressive Andy Barcham rounded Jansson as the keeper came out of his goal but he could only hit the crossbar.

Then just 8 seconds after the break City were 2-0 down as Simeon Jackson profited on Duffy's poor header to fire home.

From there on in it was an uphill struggle for the Grecians. Scott Golbourne and Barry Corr were introduced to try and spark some live into City's attack .

Matt Taylor was also withdrawn for Dan Seaborne but despite many fan's worries this was a tactical swap and not an injury to the City captain.

It was the home side who then put the game to bed when Gills winger Jon Nutter skinned Duffy and his cross could only be headed down by Troy Archibald-Henville into the path of Luke Rooney.

And the youngster fired a superb effort past Jansson to complete a miserable afternoon for the loyal 329 travelling fans.

There was still time for Jansson to deny Gowling's curling effort in the dying minutes as City slipped to 20th in League One and failed to score  for the first time since drawing a blank at Chester in February, 20 games ago.

All afternoon Dennis Oli and Simeon Jackson caused the City rearguard no end of problems while Stuart Fleetwood was left isolated upfront.

Many of City's consistent performers in past seasons failed to step up to the plate and the afternoon stands out as one of the worst performances by Paul Tisdale's side in a long time.

City lined-up: Jansson, Tully, (Golbourne 61) Archibald-Henville, Taylor, (Seaborne 61) Duffy, Russell, Dunne, (Corr 61) Harley, Stewart, Sercombe, Fleetwood.

Subs not used: Marriott, Cozic, Edwards and Stansfield.

Paul Tisdale told the media after the match that they won't be offering a contract to trialist Wayne Gray.

The striker has spent a few weeks at the club but was told he wouldn't be offered a deal.
