Exiles Lose Greek Grecian Cup
The second Greek Grecian Cup was played tonight on the Astroturf pitch at FC Korthion. The 4 team tournament comprised an Exiles side along with local side FC Hydrusa and two Korthion teams.
In a semi final/final format City played Hydrusa first up. City, in a 4-4-2 formation, lined up: Neil Le Milliere, James Moore, Steve Chown, Phil Stone, Ed Beattie, Giles Beattie, Ian Morris, Brian Melia, Brian Ingersent, Kevin Fitzgerald and Jony "Jonys Bar" Brown. On the bench were Jim Shepherd and Ben Ahrends. City wore their new Villa Rena sponsored kit.
In a tight game it was unfortunate City could not take their chances. The Hydrusa keeper was by far the busiest and City also hit the post from an inswinging corner. Hydrusa were more clinical and the team run by Dinos "The Fireman" Pappchristos ran out 2-0 victors. City couldn't fashion a goal despite the second half introduction of Shepherd as they rushed forward. Their efforts weren't aided by the blistering late afternoon heat as the wind dropped and temperatures reaked at 30 degrees.
The second semi final saw the two Korthion teams slug it out with the A side romping to a 4-2 victory despite scoring an own goal and conceding a penalty.
The final was then played with Hydrusa and Korthion A playing on an ever increasingly shaded pitch as the floodlights kicked in. No quarter was aked or given and the teams couldn't be separated in a 2-2 draw to share the honours.
The third place play off was another tight affair. City, starting with the same line up as before, were a match for their opponents and at half time went in 0-0. There was controversy at the beginning of the second half as Korthian kicked off and scored direct as manager Le Milliere was busy making substitutions from the edge of his area. After a couple of minutes hand waving and incredulous looks the referee decided to start the period again. Shepherd and Ahrends were introduced to liven up the side and their was a special debut for local lad Stefanos Veniamakis in the centre of the City midfield. Despite carving out some good opportunities though it was the home side who scored first with a neat move down the right and telling cross. As City pushed forward they were then caught at the back to end the game 2-0. the Exiles now move on to Worldnet in Leeds on July 19th/20th for their next tournament.
Post match presentations took place as the hosts were given City memorabilia including shirts and programmes.
The Exiles would like to extend their thanks to Dinos and the rest of the island Fire Rescue team for arranging the venue.
