Grecian's Promotion Success to be saved for Future Generations
The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded a grant of almost Fifty Thousand Pounds (£49,700) to the Exeter City Supporters' Trust (ECFCST) for an Exhibition and Archive of the club's heritage called Grecian Voices, it was announced today.
The project will enable Exeter City's rich history to be documented and recorded for generations of supporters to come. As well as digitising and archiving memorabilia relating to significant events and players in the club's history, the project will carry out an oral history of fans' and players' memories, and produce a community film about the club's heritage. A key part of the project will also include a major interactive exhibition at St. James Park. This will create a permanent record and legacy for the community to celebrate the Grecians' culture and heritage.
Commenting on the award Tony Badcock, a member of the Exeter City Supporters' Trust Board of Society said, "The win at Wembley was just reward for those fans that have stood by this club when it was needed most. Exeter City has a rich and dramatic history that deserves to be celebrated. From touring Argentina and Brazil in 1914, the 1931 and 1981 F.A. Cup runs, and the wonderful characters who have played for our club from Bastin and Pym, to Kellow and Banks. This footballing legacy deserves to be preserved for our generations to come".
Frances Farley, Exeter City's Operations Director also paid tribute to those who have helped to make this award possible. She said, "Many people have been working towards establishing an historical archive for the past two years and we are delighted that the HLF have agreed to support this project. I would particularly like to thank Mary Godwin, Community Museum's Officer who has supported the Club and Trust in putting this bid forward. This is an excellent example of how we are successfully working in partnership with others".
In explaining the significance of this award, Julie Cooper, Acting Head of South West Region for HLF, added: "The Grecian Voices project will be a fantastic resource and we are so pleased to help bring it to life. HLF is dedicated to opening up heritage resources to as many people as possible, and this project will enable everyone to explore a huge variety of historic material and residents' memories that cover the club's eventful past."
