Grecian Voices - Football, But Not As We Know It!

Posted on: Thu 26 Mar 2009

My first full month with the club was filled with numerous meetings, lots of really enthusiastic people and the arrival at the club of several interesting items. One of the most unusual articles to turn up was sent in by local man Dick Passmore.Having read about our new project on the Exeter Memories Web Forum he sent in these images of a programme for a game of American Football, played here at St James' Park.

Played at St James Park on Sunday January 7, 1945 the match saw two competing teams from the US Navy: the Sea Lions versus McKees Maulers.Quite what the locals made of the match we can only wonder…but we'd love to know. The game ended 13 - 6 to the Sea Lions and entertainment was provided by Devonshire Regimental Band; before the game there was a ceremony of trooping the U.S. flag.

Admission was the princely sum of just one shilling.Where you there? What was it like?Did you understand what was going on or was it just good entertainment? As with many other parts of southern England, Exeter had a strong relationship with US troops stationed locally during WW2, maybe you remember some being stationed at St James Park?

If anyone remembers being at the match or any other quirky event held at St James Park, or has other historical items / pictures linking to the club please get in touch; your help is invaluable.
