Grecian Voices - What 'Might' Have Been?
On Saturday we welcome back to St James' Park some of the players from the successful 1963/4 promotion winning side. Now, with all of the planning that goes into making such things happen I got to wondering how many of you reading this today will remember watching any of the games? Who remembers watching the local news and seeing Arnold Mitchell being interviewed at the train station as the team returned home after the last game? Did anyone collect newspaper clippings of the season and has proudly kept them tucked away for more than 40 years? How did you feel finally seeing City promoted?

The reason why I used the phrase 'What might have been?' for the heading is two fold.Firstly one wonders how the players felt as they proudly posed in their smart kits, promoted to the Third Division and perhaps hoping that they could repeat the previous years' success. And what of the fans, who no doubt viewed this picture in the Express & Echo in August 1964; were you inspired? Could you see the Grecians push further up the ladder?Secondly the phrase sums up everything for me that it means to be a fan.For some of you looking at this picture with 40+ year's hindsight a certain feeling of nostalgia will undoubtedly hit you; a feeling of 'what might have been' as you remember with fondness or regret the struggles of the team in the next few seasons after promotion.
The Grecian Voices Project needs anyone with an opinion to get involved and as everyone knows, all football fans have an opinion. If you're inspired to be nostalgic by seeing the players from City's first promotion winning side at Saturday's match then write, email or call.
