Paul Tisdale's Post-Charlton Thoughts

Posted on: Tue 29 Sep 2009

Paul Tisdale talked to the press following his side's narrow 2-1 defeat against second placed Charlton Athletic

"I'm terribly disappointed but I think we gave a good account of ourselves, although we were slightly slow to start. The players can start to believe we have a half chance in this league.

We passed the ball well and that is our game. It was a big arena for us and I think second half we passed it better than our opponents so I was proud of the players for that.

I can take encouragement from it and I hope the players can. I think you can go into the game knowing what you have got coming, we are fair game in this league for sure. I am not saying we are going to be one of the pacesetters, far from it.

But we have come up two leagues in two years and we are finding our feet nice and firmly at the moment and it gives me a chance to build on the team and I think we will do that, we have got a chance.

Tisdale was frustrated at the soft first goal

We definitely came into the game expecting a big half an hour from Charlton, the players prepared for it and we didn't try and take the game to them and having weathered the storm I believed we had a chance.

I think Charlton deserved to score in the first half an hour with the pressure they had and they possibly could have had a penalty. I think we got away with one or two things in the first half an hour but ironically having weathered that we conceded a poor goal. It felt soft.

It was such a pity we conceded a poorish goal for their second which was a real shame. We haven't seen a  great deal of this league yet but Charlton are one of the better sides and we should take some confidence and some belief from this game today. It would have been a lot to have come away with a point but we came close.

Troy had a game of two halves, it was like he was playing uphill first half and downhill second. He was terrific in the second half, he wasn't out of tune first half it was just a case of positioning. But I put Rob into that position and I thought he was our best player. At 37 he was just fantastic.

I wanted someone experienced and astute in that position which I think was their key area first half. It was more about putting Rob there and he passed the ball extremely well and Troy surprised us with his performance in midfield and I wasn't  expecting him to last the game but he did.

Troy vs Charlton
Troy performed superbly in the defensive midfield position

Craig Noone is knackered because he has been injured, he hasn't trained. I thought he was very very good today but he had to come off with 25 minutes to go. If you are going to take someone off its the one who hasn't trained for two weeks and who could possibly break down with cramp.

It was a shame, I think their right back should have been booked in the first half for a very tough tackle on him and that then would have made Craig's job more easier. He had an excellent match, it is just a shame about his goal, it must have been very close.

It was a really good game for us and I'm very proud of the players. The supporters must have had a good time, you could hear them singing at the end even though we lost. We gave a good account of ourselves and again I think it should give us real confidence for what is to come for the rest of the year."
