Stanno Pinpoints Secrets Behind Late Equaliser

Posted on: Wed 02 Dec 2009

Adam Stansfield believes City's hard work and their quick throw routine were the vital ingredients behind their late equaliser against Millwall on Tuesday night.

After going down to ten men the Grecians had to up their efforts against a Millwall side viewed by many as one of the best sides in League One.

And with the testing weather conditions making life hard for goalkeepers it was always vital to get the ball in the danger area quickly and it eventually paid off for Stansfield with his late strike.

The former Hereford man said: "I think it just proves even when you have ten men if you keep working hard, putting the ball in the box and keep shooting you are going to get the luck and get it in the net. If you keep getting them in there you will get the rewards.

"I saw the keeper edging off his line expecting the cross and just used the wind to my advantage and popped it into the far corner."

His 87th minute goal came after Richard Duffy's quick throw put the striker through and Stansfield is bemused why more teams don't try that attacking method.

"I used to have a great understanding with Deano on quick throw-ins and I don't know why teams don't use them more," he said.

"You can't be offside, you can come from anywhere and if they have got a decent throw then you are going to be in.

"I think it is the first time we have managed to get one right this season and we have got our rewards from it."

A virus ruled Stanno out of the Brentford match but since his return he has made four substitute appearances, scoring twice. He now hopes that if he keeps his performances at the same level as the past two weeks then a start will hopefully beckon.

"I had to work hard to get my chance after my injury and I took it with the Tranmere game and got myself back in the team but then missed the Brentford game," he said.

"I have got to just keep going and coming on and doing what I'm doing and hopefully ill get a start soon.

"I think I am back to full fitness now, I don't think the couple of days of flu took much out of me."

Last weekend's goal to put the Grecians 2-1 up at Stockport was described by manager Paul Tisdale as 'Premier League quality' but Stansfield believes it was just a case of doing some of football's basics very well.

He said: "Obviously it was a great ball from Ryan and then you just work on your basics which are taking that first touch across the defender and he either brings you down and gets sent off or you are in and that is what I have been training for.

"I got a good connection with it and it went into the far corner and then did the same minutes later for Logie so he could get a goal."
