Danny Haynes, Northern Ireland international Ivan Sproule, Alvaro Saborio and David Clarkson all netted twice with defender Danny Ball scoring the other.
Richard Logan scored City's only goal, firing a superb left-footed shot past Steve Collis in the first half.
Bristol City's selection for this totesport.com combination league match always looked like testing the Grecians' second-string and their starting XI boasted four internationals.
Clarkson, who scored for Scotland in one of his two international caps earned back in 2008, led the line for the away side and he had the first chance of the evening but he shot at Jones after a good run from Haynes.
The tone of the match was set very early on and it was obvious to the 204 fans present that this game had bags of goals in it.
Neil Saunders ambitious volley flew wide before Haynes put City ahead, converting Ivan Sproule's cross from inside the box.
Just eight minutes later it was two nil when young defender Ball diverted a cross into Paul Jones' far corner from close range.
The game continued to be played at a hectic tempo with Logan heading Saunders' corner straight at Collis before Troy Archibald-Henville and Craig McAllister combined to send Stuart Fleetwood through but the Welshman shot over.
City's corners were proving to be a threat and McAllister had his header saved from Chris Shephard's delivery on this occasion.
But despite having some dangerous attacks City had far less experience at the back with just 36 career appearances between the back-four and at times they struggled to cope with the searing pace of Haynes, the delivery of Sproule and the striking talents of their strike pair.
And one of that duo, Clarkson was put through by a superb flick by Haynes on 21 minutes but his low shot was dragged across Jones' goal.
The ball was down the other end again soon after and Collis had to be alert to deny Fleetwood with his legs after the striker was put through by Saunders.
And Fleetwood had a claim for a penalty minutes after when Saunders and McAllister combined.
Then on the 25 minute mark Clarkson scored his first of the night when he took on the ball on before sending a rasping shot into the top corner.
Logan then gave the home support something to cheer about when he met Saunders' free-kick with a superb volley across goal to make it 3-1.
City should really have narrowed the lead to one goal just minutes later. The lively Fleetwood's run into the box ended with him squaring the ball to McAllister inside the area and the Scotsman's strike from close range squirmed past the keeper but was hacked off the line.
Jones didnt have a night to remember in the City goal but he made a fine save on 41 minutes when Costa Rica international Saborio found space to wind up a thunderbolt of an effort that was tipped over the bar by his fingertips.
But the 23-year-old will be disappointed with the fourth goal of the night almost on the stroke of half-time. Sproule beat Shephard down the right hand side and ran towards the box before drilling a low shot through Jones and into the back of the net.
Joe Burnell made his first appearance for the first team on Saturday and he came close to scoring just after half-time, his right-footed shot being well saved.
Saborio and Clarkson were causing the very inexperienced City backline a lot of problems and they combined to make it five on 51 minutes. Saborio squaring the ball to Clarkson who curled a shot into the far corner, leaving Jones flat-footed.
And Jones was called into action three minutes later as he saved from Sproule.
Ben Watson then entered the fray for Logan but it was at the other end of the field where the action was happening, Saborio scoring a very simple goal as Clarkson rolled the ball across the box for the loanee to tap home at the farpost.
Saunders almost got one back soon after but his cannon of a shot flew off the inside of the post and the shot flew to the waiting Fleetwood who shot narrowly wide.
There was just 68 minutes on the clock when once again the visitors sliced open the City defence and made it 7-1, Clarkson's right-foot cross from the edge of the box was headed past Jones at his near post by Saborio.
Fleetwood then dribbled his way through a few black shirts into a dangerous position and was only denied by an alert Collis.
McAllister was training with Paul Buckle's Torquay last week but he was back in a red and white shirt tonight and he had two chances in quick succession first heading a corner wide before taking James Dunne's pass and shooting over from distance.
He was replaced almost instantly by youngster Dan Western and he forced the City keeper into a fine save with a curling effort after a one-two with Watson.
It wasn't the first time Bristol City have filled their boots at St James' Park in a non-competitive match, Marcus Stewart was amongst the goals in 2005 when they hammered the Grecians 7-0 in a pre-season friendly.
And they would reach that seven goal margin on 81 minutes. The electric Haynes capping a superb individual performance with a run and shot low past the despairing Jones into the corner.
Troy Archibald-Henville's evening then came to an end as City's new signing was replaced by Nick Watts before the icing was really put on the cake infront of the watching manager Gary Johnson.
Clarkson showed superb awareness and skill to backheel the ball from the byline into the path of the incoming Sproule who fired home. How many times can you say you've seen 10 goals at St James' Park?!
Bristol City's line-up tonight would have given some of League One's elite a run for their money with some expert finishing and dynamic attacking play but despite this Collis in the Bristol City goal was tested more than the scoreline suggests.
