The Andy Marriott Column
This week our Official Website columnist Andy Marriott talks about his return to the side, the point at MK Dons and his career plans.
It was good to be back in the team on Saturday after a spell on the bench although I didn't know about it until just before kick off when Paul said that he was going to play me and it was a surprise to be honest. Nothing had been said to me during the week but you never know what is going to happen in football so you have always got to be prepared and I was just training and keeping my head down.
Paul decided to play me and I was more than happy for that opportunity. I suppose in some ways it is nice and with my duel role I don't have a lot of time to be thinking about things too much but it was great just to be back in.
I was pleased with my saves although about 20 minutes in I hadn't touched the ball and sometimes you want a decent early feel or otherwise you almost want to justify being back in the side. It was nice to make the save from Chadwick just before half time and then the header from Matt Taylor. Matt had done well as their striker was the other side of him and he has got a toe to and I've just enough of a fingertip to it.
Another positive from that game was not only the confidence boost it gave us but also that we started picking up some points. We have a relatively poor run in terms of points despite playing some good football. So it was good to put an end to that run and hopefully we can now moving forward starting with this weekend.
I think we are hoping for a big crowd tomorrow and it is a big game in many ways for us. After the disappointment of the Carlisle game we know have to get back on the horse and start picking up points at home. We need a Leeds type performance and it is going to a really good battle.
What the Leeds game taught us is the importance of getting the first goal, if you can get that then that bit of confidence drives you on and gives you something to build on. And from the fans point of view there is probably a rise in expectation after that match. Having beaten Leeds people think 'we can do it again'. It is still going to be a really big ask but we have been in nearly in all our games and it is cruicial this week that we are in the game right until the end.
I have played against Southampton striker Rickie Lambert a few times when he was at Bristol Rovers and with Holt at Rochdale. He is going to be a test for us, he is very confident and thinks he can score from anywhere so we are really going to have to be at our best on Saturday. If we can stop him scoring then that is a massive part of their team. But there is no use stopping Lambert scoring if their centre-half comes up and scores three from a corner!
Dan Seaborne coming back tomorrow also adds a little bit of spice to the occasion. He has been part of two promotions here and was a very well liked member of the squad. People were sad to see him go but hopefully he doesn't take anything back to the South Coast with him.
Generally have played some good football throughout the season but maybe not taken the chances that have come our way and at the other end we have given away too many goals. In those two 18-yard boxes we probably haven't done well enough. That is the crucial thing for us now, being uglier and getting points off the back of it.
I was asked this week whether I see this as my last season and I don't see it. I still feel fit, enjoy training and have the desire to win and to play. So I don't see this as my last season.
