Marriott Isn't Hanging Up His Gloves

Posted on: Fri 12 Feb 2010

Goalkeeping, so the cliché goes, is all about experience and a quick scan through last night's Premier League line-ups shows that age is no barrier when it comes to goalkeeping.

39-year-old Edwin Van Der Sar, 38-year-old Brad Friedel, 39-year-old David James, 37-year-old Mark Schwarzer all started for their clubs yesterday and are still going strong for club (and in most cases country) as they head towards 40.

These examples will be music to the ears of City's number one Andy Marriott who recently broke back into the Exeter side after a short spell on the bench aged 39.

Marriott has already made 14 appearances this season as he nears a career the 600 game mark and he has certainly not let anyone down with some solid performances.

And he told us this week how he has no intention of calling it a day just yet.

"I don't see this as being my last season," the former Forest shotstopper said.

"I feel still fit and I still enjoy training and have the same desire to win and play.

"I want to carry on playing and play whatever part I can to help the club and I am more than happy to fill the role.

Marriott also cites the example of Burton Albion veteran Kevin Poole as a reason not to throw in his gloves.

Poole, the oldest player in the Football League, has made well over 120 appearances since his 40th birthday back in 2003 for Burton Albion.

And as recently as last month he made two appearances for Paul Peschisolido's side, including starting in their 3-2 win over our near neighbours Torquay United.

Marriott said: "Kevin Poole played at 46 in the league last week so you always keep yourself in the frame."

After his number one returned to the side at stadiummk Paul Tisdale joked with kellowsbootlaces that his experienced keeper was definitely not retiring from international football.

Marriott played for Wales five times between 1996 and 1998 but he isn't waiting by the phone for a call from the FAW ahead of the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

"I am not sure the call from John Toshack it is going to come to be honest!" he joked.

"But I never retire from anything.

"You never know when you may have an opportunity! There is always one out there and you never know when it may be.

"And you can never say no to anything!"

Marriott has his own column for the Official Website click here to read some of his pieces.
