'Matt's Award Was Much Deserved'

Posted on: Fri 14 May 2010

Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale this week paid tribute to his ever-present captain Matt Taylor after he was voted the fan's Player of the Year on Saturday with almost 50% of the votes.

It is the second time Taylor has won the award in the season seasons since joining the club and Tisdale, who bought Taylor with him from Team Bath, was full of praise for the centre-back's campaign.

"Matt Taylor's award was much deserved," he said.

"He has been ever-present and like a lot of our players he will start next year a better player than he started this year. He has played a huge part and he has improved."

While keeping the opposition at bay countless times this season with blocks, tackles and plenty of headers Taylor has also been hugely impressive in at the other end, scoring seven times including Saturday's equaliser and the opening goal at Hartlepool the week before.

And Tisdale paid tribute to the deadly combination of Ryan Harley's corners and the head of Taylor.

He said: "The goals he has scored have been hugely vital because we had to limit ourselves in the last couple of months to being very tight at the back and being very good at set-pieces.

"So he has become the main man really, Ryan's delivery and Matt's heading."

The provider himself explained how their manager had pinpointed Huddersfield's defensive frailty from set-pieces ahead of the match.

Harley, who ended up City's top scorer with 10 goals, said: "The manager said to us on Friday that it was the best chance we had of scoring.

"He said they are quite weak on corners, we worked on that over a few days and it paid off.

"That is four or five goals Matt has had from my corners and we work on it a lot in training."

Taylor also made the bench for BBC show Late Kick Off's Team of the Season for the South and South West.

As part of the composition of the squad, the pundits Leroy Rosenior, Graeme Murty and Jonathan Pearce were not allowed to choose more than two players from the same side in the starting eleven.
