Having been released by Milton Keynes Dons, Jamie was signed in August 2005 after impressing during a pre-season trial. Jamie had previously played for City manager Alex Inglethorpe whilst they were both at Leatherhead, and it was that link that helped persuade the striker's decision to sign for the Grecians. Mackie came through the ranks at Leatherhead under Inglethorpe before Wimbledon snapped him up on a two-year YTS contract. Within a year, the striker had forced his way into the first team and played almost an entire season in the Championship. But he was frozen out in 2004-05, making just four appearances and spending most of the season turning out for the reserves. Jamie went on loan to Sutton United in August 2005, but returned to St James' Park to make his first team debut a month later in the home fixture with Woking. Netted his first goal for the Grecians in a 2-0 win at Hereford United in November 2005.
