EXETER CITY acquired experienced right-back Danny Butterfield in September 2013, with the Boston-born defender having recently departed Carlisle United following an injury lay-off.

Butterfield played for Grimsby for almost a decade through youth and professional ranks,  making 124 Football League appearances for the Mariners and scoring three goals before making the move south to join Crystal Palace.

He would enjoy some of the best success of his career at Selhurst Park, most notably scoring a ‘perfect hat-trick’ against Wolves in an FA Cup tie in the space of less than seven minutes.

He then moved to Southampton in 2010 and was part of the team that won successive promotions to help the club to the Premier League.  Butterfield spent part of the 2012/13 season on loan with Bolton Wanderers before being released from Southampton at the end of the season.

After joining the Grecians as a member of the playing staff, he was appointed as player-coach in summer 2015. He was named the club's PFA Community Champion at the end-of-season awards in summer 2016.
