Grecians right-back Danny Butterfield
joined Exeter City in September 2013, shortly after leaving his non-contract arrangement with Carlisle United which had ended early with an injury.
Born in Boston, the defender played for Grimsby for almost a decade through youth and professional ranks. He made 124 Football League appearances for the Mariners before making the move south to join Crystal Palace.
A steady and versatile player for the Eagles, he happily filled positions in defence or midfield – and with a shortage of playing staff not long after the club had entered administration in 2009/10, he was even deployed in a striker’s role.
It proved an inspired decision to give him the chance to lead the line, as he scored a ‘perfect hat-trick’ against Wolves in an FA Cup tie in the space of less than seven minutes.
He then moved to Southampton in 2010 and was part of the team that won successive promotions to help the club to the Premier League. Butterfield spent part of the 2012/13 season on loan with Bolton before being released from Southampton at the end of the season.
