Midfielder Sercombe, a born-and-bred Exeter boy, was already a local hero when he popped in a goal against Plymouth Argyle in the Devon Derby at St James Park in December 2012. However just two weeks later, ecstasy turned to agony for the playmaker as he broke his ankle against Barnet, curtailing his 2012/13 campaign.
He didn’t return to action in time to feature again that season, but he did manage to turn out to warm up with the rest of the squad on the final day at Chesterfield and returned in time for a full pre-season.
Sercombe, who can operate comfortably either on the right flank or inside, came through Exeter City’s Academy ranks. He first broke into the Grecians’ first team as a 17-year-old, making an early substitute appearance in an away win at Altrincham. He had gone on to turn out in City colours in senior action a total of 175 times before the start of the 2013/14 season.
