Dorchester Town 1 City 6

29 July 2017

Exeter City produced an excellent pre-season display at Dorchester Town to run away 6-1 winners.

First-half goals from David Wheeler, Reuben Reid and Jake Taylor put the Grecian into a commanding position before Lloyd James, Pierce Sweeney and young Jack Sparkes added to the tally after the break.

City manager Paul Tisdale named the strongest possible starting XI available to him, with only Ryan Harley and Dean Moxey missing out through injury.

There were also a couple of City players, Kyle Egan and Jordan Storey, in the Dorchester side having joined the Magpies on loan.

City, who went into the match on the back of a disappointing pre-season defeat at Poole Town on Tuesday night, started in determined fashion.

The match was only three minutes old when Reid and Wheeler linked up well on the right forcing Storey into a crucial sliding challenge on the edge of the box.

Reid then did well to set up with Tillson with a sight of goal but the midfielder sliced his effort inches wide of the post from 25 yards.

City got the lead their early play deserved though on 24 minutes as James chipped a ball towards the edge of the area that Reid flicked on for Wheeler to control and fire past Chris Weale.

Three minutes later Wheeler returned the favour for Reid who delivered a clinical right-foot finish into the bottom corner.

Moments later Dorchester Town had their best chance of the first half as Jamie Beasley delivered a low cross that Jordan Moore-Taylor and Craig Woodman had to clear with Sam Lanahan looking for a tap in at the back post.

Reid continued to look the most deadly striker on the pitch though as he tested Weale with another powerful shot from the edge of the box before thumping a long-range effort off the underside of the bar. The ball looked to have crossed the line as it bounced down but Jake Taylor was there to follow up and tap the ball home from a yard out.

It took City just five minutes of the second half to add to their lead as a poor throw from a Dorchester defender went right onto the head of Wheeler and he nodded the ball down for James to send a controlled finish into the bottom corner.

However, that seemed to wake Dorchester Town into action for a few minutes as substitute David Jerrard brought a good save out of Christy Pym with a first-time volley and then hit another effort that was well blocked by Troy Brown.

Then Pierce Sweeney needed to be in the right position to head off the line as Tom Blair tried to loop the ball into the net from 35 yards after Pym had raced out of his area to clear.

However, City were still in control of the proceedings and made it 5-0 with 25 minutes left to play as Pierce Sweeney thundered a shot into the top right-hand corner of the net before McAlinden and Tillson both had good efforts blocked.

Then it was the turn of substitute Jack Sparkes to impress he weaved his way past five Dorchester Town players before testing Weale with a shot from inside the box.

However, on 80 minutes the youngster had his goal as he cut in from the right and delayed his shot two or three times before firing a left-foot shot into the back of the net.

It meant even a late goal from Dorchester United, as one of their trialist turned in the box and fired home, it could not take the gloss off what was a very good day in pre-season for City.
