📝 Match Preview: Northampton Town v City

The details ahead of the trip to Northampton.

9 March 2019

Exeter City will be looking to continue their positive run away from home when they make the trip to Northampton Town in Sky Bet League Two in a 2pm kick-off.

The Grecians haven’t been beaten since January on the road, which was a narrow loss at Newport County. Since then City have picked up draws at promotion rivals Carlisle United and Lincoln City and a win over Crewe Alexandra.

Ahead of the match, manager Matt Taylor said: “They’ve (Northampton) got some good players, a team that we watched a lot at the start of the season, and they were underachieving because they have some seriously good players in that squad.

“They’re hitting form at the right time and the manager has got them going, so they’re a good team, a strong team and a physical team who will put a lot of balls into our box. We’re going to have to defend but play our way, and the Exeter City way, and try to hurt the opposition at every opportunity."

LAST TIME WE MET

The sides last met back in November where they played out a 2-2 draw at St James Park. Jake Taylor found the net on 14 minutes before Billy Waters levelled things. The Grecians took the lead through Jayden Stockley once again just before half-time and as the game hit 90 minutes the Grecians were dealt a blow when a Stockley own goal gave Keith Curle’s side a point in Devon.

BY ROAD

There are a couple of ways that you can reach the PTS Academy Stadium. Take the M5 north before joining the M4 East and take the exit for Swindon where you need to follow the A420 towards Oxford. As you get nearer towards Oxford you then need to follow the A34 towards the M40 before joining the motorway for a short time before leaving for the A43 with will take you towards Northampton. As you get close to Northampton, you need to go straight over the double roundabout which takes you over the M1 and then joins the A5123. Follow that road before going straight over the next roundabout onto the A5076. Northampton Town football club is a little way up that road to the right. Other routes see you travel up the M5 before joining the M45 and coming down the M1 into Northampton. Northampton Town Football Club inform all supporters that supporters using the north or the non-tarmac south car parks at the stadium will be required to pay £4.00 to park their car at all matches.

BY RAIL

To avoid a number of changes, perhaps the best train to take on the day of the match is the 08:23 train from Exeter St David’s. This train travels to Birmingham New Street before you have to change to complete your journey to Northampton. This will get you into Northampton for 12:20. Later trains will require you to change in London and use the London Underground service to get from London Paddington to London Euston station. Some routes can also require another change at Milton Keynes Central. You can take the same route (via Birmingham New Street) back to Exeter at 16:25 and 17:25 which should get you back prior to 22:00 on the day of the match. The train station is 1.6 miles from the stadium which is just over a 30-minute walk. Otherwise, a taxi may be necessary to complete the journey.

PUBS/FOOD

According to footballgroundguide.com, the stadium itself has Carrs Bar (the entrance to which is at the back of the main stand) which allows in away supporters. It also shows televised football. The stadium is built on a leisure complex on the outskirts of Northampton, therefore visiting fans on arrival are pretty much confined to the complex.  There is a McDonalds nearby and there is a Flaming Grill pub, which offers real ale, serves food and shows televised sport.

Grecians suffer back-to-back losses as goals from Aaron Pierre and Andy Williams condemn them to defeat at Northampton

9 March 2019

Exeter City suffered back-to-back defeats as goals from Aaron Pierre and Andy Williams condemned them to a 2-1 defeat at Northampton Town.

The Grecians, who struggled to create chances in the first half, were much better after the break and pulled a goal back through Aaron Martin but couldn’t find an equaliser.

City manager Matt Taylor made four changes from the side that lost to Tranmere Rovers last time out as Jonathan Forte, Alex Hartridge, Aaron Martin and Nicky Law all came into the team at the expense of Pierce Sweeney, Randell Williams, Lee Holmes and Donovan Wilson.

It was a slow start to the game as only Sam Hoskins’ wayward shot after five minutes threatening either goal, before the Grecians, who struggled for possession and territory in the opening 20 minutes, sprung to life and should have taken the lead.

The chance came from a good run forward by Nicky Law, that created an opening for Jake Taylor. However, his shot was blocked and when the ball was worked to Matt Jay seven yards from goal he had two follow up efforts also charged down by Northampton defenders.

The opening goal came seven minutes after that as Marvin Sordell headed a cross, from a short corner routine, onto the crossbar and as the ball fell kindly to Aaron Pierre he nodded home from a yard out despite the attempts from Dara O’Shea to block his effort on the line.

After that there was only one more clearcut opening as a long ball over the top of the City defence created problems and Daniel Powell ran through on goal only to have his shot well blocked by the legs of Christy Pym.

Matt Taylor made two changes at the break as Lee Holmes and Hiram Boateng came on for Alex Hartridge and Archie Collins.

The changes, which also saw City switch to a 4-4-2 formation, seemed to have a positive impact as Jay warmed the gloves of David Cornell with a first time shot after 54 minutes. However, slightly against the run of play, Northampton extended their lead as Daniel Powell got in on the left side of the box and squared a ball for Williams to tap home at the far post.

Four minutes later though and City were back in the match as Jay’s corner was headed goalwards by Jonathan Forte. Cornell, again, produced a good save but Aaron Martin was there to follow up and not the ball home.

Matt Taylor, in the final quarter of an hour, sent on Ryan Bowman for  Law and the striker was close to getting an equaliser when Lee Holmes hung a right-wing cross up to the back post but the home side managed to clear for a corner.

In the end, it was the hosts who came closest to getting a goal in the closing stages as Andy Williams’ turn and shot inside the area forced Pym into a finger-tip save.

Northampton Town: Cornell, Buchanan, Goode, A Taylor, Hoskins, Foley, D Powell (J Powell, 78), Pierre, Turnbull, O’Toole (Elsnik, 90+1), Sordell (A Williams, 34). Sub: Coddington, J Wiliams, Bowditch, Bridge.

Booked: A Taylor

Exeter City: Pym, Woodman, O’Shea, A Martin, Law (Bowman, 77), Forte, Jay, K Wilson, Taylor, Collins (Boateng, 45), Hartridge (Holmes, 45). Subs not used: Hamon, Holmes, R Williams, Bowman, J Brown, T Brown, Boateng.
