Fans’ favourite David Wheeler joined the Grecians the day before the start of the 2013/14 season having impressed while playing for Staines Town in the Conference South.

He started his career with his hometown club Brighton but was released before reaching scholarship level with the academy. He joined fellow Sussex side Lewes for four seasons before relocating to London for university, when he signed for Staines. He graduated from Brunel University with a degree in sports science in 2013.

David netted three times in his first season with Exeter City before finding the back of the net seven times in 47 appearances in the 2014/15 season. A run of seven goals in 14 games at the start of the following campaign saw David linked with a number of League One and Championship sides before he decided to put pen to paper on a new contract at St James Park.

David shone in the 2016/17 campaign, bagging 19 goals in 43 appearances as the Grecians reached the play-offs.

He then also scored in the play-off semi-final victory against Carlisle United and a superb goal at Wembley Stadium against Blackpool.

During the season his run of eight goals in seven games helped City maintain their 12-game unbeaten run over the winter period. His fine form throughout the season saw him pick up the fans’ player of the year award.

He remains a popular figure both with both his teammates and City supporters and writes a weekly column in the Exeter Express & Echo where he gives his insights into life at St James Park and his thoughts on politics.
