Matt Oakley renews contract with Exeter City

5 July 2015

Midfielder to stay on for another season

Exeter City are delighted to announce that midfielder Matt Oakley has signed a new deal to remain at Exeter City for the forthcoming season.

Oakley, now 37, is a senior figure in the Grecians’ dressing room and will embark on his fourth full campaign since joining on a permanent deal in 2012.  He had been on loan at St James Park for a brief period in the previous season from Leicester City.

With 638 career appearances to his name to date – many of which came in the Premier League with Southampton and Derby County – Matt has more games under his belt than any other player in the squad.  48 of those appearances came in Exeter City colours last season, meaning he missed just a single game in the entire campaign and took up positions in both defence and midfield.

Matt was a regular captain of the team on the pitch during the latter half of the season, and played the entire 90 minutes on 43 occasions.

Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale said: “Matt played more minutes than anyone else last season – for someone of his age to be able to play over 90 per cent of all the minutes in a season is quite an achievement.

“It is a long season and there will be a time when there is a dip in energy – but on the whole last season he was exceptional and he brings a lot of experience and knowledge.  I want to get every last drop out of him that I can!

“Here’s hoping that he can have another similar season again.  Whether he plays as many games or not, time will tell.”

Season Tickets are on sale now for the new campaign, which kicks off at St James Park against Yeovil Town on Saturday 8th August.  Have you got yours yet?  Click here to see full prices and how you can get yours.
