Hear the amazing story of when City became the first team to play Brazil in 1914
On Wednesday, February 22 at 7pm, St Thomas Library will be hosting ‘Have you ever played Brazil’; a talk on the unbelievable story of the time Exeter City were the first team to play Brazil back in 1914.The event will see experts from the football club describing in detail the historic moment and subsequent events. The ball from the tour from all those years ago will be proudly on display, and able to be viewed close up.
The evening will also cover local life in the early twentieth century, the origins of football in Exeter, an account of the tour in Argentina and Brazil, the impact of the First World War, and the club’s current links with Brazil.
The Supporters Trust’s History Group recently attended the St Thomas Library Local History Day on January 25. Group Archivist Will Barrett assembled a wide range of City memorabilia which were enjoyed by scores of people during the day. City legend Alan Banks was among those who visited.
Presence at the event formed part of the programme of activities under the Heritage Lottery Fund supported History of St James Park project. As a result of the display several elderly fans agreed to be interviewed about their memories of the Club and others have offered to give or lend historic City related items in their possession. These will be digitised for the Grecian Archive website.
