Having secured a fifth-round replay at the real St James Park, thanks to a 1-1 draw in Newcastle, the Grecians blew their higher division opponents away with goals from Hatch, Ian Pearson, Peter Rogers and Martyn Rogers.
It was Peter Hatch who got the opener as he swung the ball in - from the same quadrant as Holmes would do many years later - to give the Grecians a great start.
He then went up to set up goals from Ian Pearson and Peter Rogers before Martyn Rogers added a fourth.
