📝 Steve Stentiford scoops June's BIG Foundation prize

2 June 2021

This month’s BIG Foundation winner is long time City supporter Steve Stentiford.

Steve will be spending his £1,000 on a holiday - albeit with more limited options these days - likely to be a break in North Wales to celebrate his Ruby Wedding anniversary.

Steve has actively followed the Grecians since the early seventies, he actually remembers the result of his first match, in December 1972 AND who scored (for the record, City beat Barnsley 2-1 with defender Mike Balson scoring twice.

In terms of best matches watched, Steve has a few: "Firstly, May 1977 when Exeter clinched promotion to Division Three with a 3-0 win over Aldershot at the park in the sunshine. In more recent times, the Wembley win over Cambridge was obviously a great moment but my all time favourite Exeter game would undoubtedly be the City vs Newcastle FA Cup Replay at the Park in February 1981.

"Nearly 18,000 fans packed in the ground that night (hard to believe now) and the atmosphere was incredible with the most noise I have heard at the park in my time. I think the turnstiles opened at 4.30 that day (I was a teacher in Exeter at that time) and so I was in the ground soon afterwards, to take a spot at the front of the old Cowshed. 4-0 did not flatter City that night - Brian Godfrey is still my favourite Exeter manager.

"In terms of favourite players Steve would include Fred Binney, Lammie Robertson (incredibly gifted player), Peter Hatch (classy defender), Tony Kellow and Danny Bailey. In more recent times, I would pick out Scott Hiley and Adam Stansfield. Too many to mention really. These days, it is a pleasure to see the academy boys break into the first team and watch their development."
