Room for improvement was the message from Exeter City Assistant Manager Kevin Nicholson as he reacted to City’s 1-1 draw at Weston-super-Mare.
“The lads moved pretty well and covered enough ground. There were some good passages of play but also rustiness and lack of cohesion that you would expect after some time off during the off season.”
Nicho’s coaching colleague David Perkins was a surprise inclusion in the second half City team, but the Assistant Manager explained his presence in the eleven was to guide a young midfield through the match.
“It’s incredibly difficult to play, talk, coach and still be effective but it helps facilitate those young players who are out there.
“If we put too many young players out in one go it maybe sends the wrong message as those young lads have to earn the opportunity but it also waters down the experience out there and it makes it difficult for things to knit together.
“With Perks on the pitch he kept the team linked, when he was moving the ball and talking and keeping players in position, it allowed us to be more effective as we moved the ball through the lines.
