City had been leading for almost the entire second half until Ian Henderson’s deflected cross gave the Dale an equaliser in the cruellest manner, and as the Grecians tried to re-take a late lead, they were caught out on the break by Bobby Grant who netted a neat winner.  And now Scot is hoping that the Grecians can register a win by hook or by crook when the Daggers arrive, so the team can keep things ticking over in the right direction.

“We threw a few too many players forward to try and get the points that we wanted, and they broke on us with a very quick break, but it was a well-taken goal by their winger who had made a great run,” said Scot.

“So now we’re just going to get our heads down and train hard, and we’ll definitely be trying to pick up the three points on Saturday against Dagenham.  We need to start getting points back on the board – we don’t want to let it run away from us now.  We need to keep going and keep the momentum building into the play-offs.”

Bennett went on to admit that having the crowd behind the team makes a ‘massive’ difference, but he also fully appreciates the two-way relationship between the fans and the team.  As we approach the end of a long, hard season – which has left the squad injury-ravaged – he is hopeful that those wearing the red and white on Saturday will put in a strong performance to get the right result.

“Having the fans behind us is massive,” Scot continued.  “We know we need to play good football at home to get the fans on our side.  It doesn’t help when you’re coming off the pitch at half-time and they’re booing you because you’re not quite passing the ball as well as you should be on the day.

“But we do need to play the football to get the fans on our side – you can’t always expect them to be cheering you on if the football isn’t good enough – they’ve paid their money, so we’ve got to show them the respect they deserve, and we’ve got to play the right way.”
