28 January 2015

Pick your favourite strike from the last calendar year

Exeter City supporters have the chance to pick their Goal of the Year 2014 from a shortlist of six – the eventual winner will be submitted to the Football League, and will square up against the other 71 clubs at the forthcoming Football League Awards.

We have to submit the best of the bunch by Monday 2nd February 2015 – so just click here to pick your favourite!

Every goal counts the same – but some are a bit more special than others.  We asked you for some nominations, and the following half-dozen were the most common selections from the calendar year…

1.  Liam Sercombe v Southend (A) – Saturday 15th February 2014

The Grecians were trailing to Southend at Roots Hall until late in the second half, until Matt Grimes combined with Liam Sercombe from a corner kick to allow the latter to score a thunderbolt from a narrow angle to net the equaliser, en route to a 3-2 win in Essex.  Click here to watch.

2. Eliot Richards v Plymouth (A) – Tuesday 25th March 2014

Having trailed to a first-half penalty by Reuben Reid, Exeter had equalised in the Devon Derby at Home Park before this inspired goal.  A swift turn from Tom Nichols allowed him to break into the area and lay in Bristol Rovers loanee Eliot Richards, who secured a derby double over Plymouth in the closing stages.  Click here to watch.

3. Craig Woodman v Scunthorpe (H) – Saturday 26th April 2014

City knew that the only way they could secure Football League status before the final weekend was by ending Scunthorpe’s 28-game unbeaten run on the penultimate weekend.  And that’s what happened as Craig Woodman fired in City’s first from a clever free-kick routine.  Click here to watch.

4. Jimmy Keohane v Hartlepool (A) – Saturday 3rd May 2014

A dead-rubber on the final weekend saw the Grecians put in a liberated and expressive performance, which was kick-started with a fine Jimmy Keohane goal.  Released when Matt Gill put in a strong tackle, the Irishman feinted before smashing in off the bar.  Click here to watch.

5. Graham Cummins v Newport (A) – Sunday 16th November 2014

The Grecians visited Rodney Parade earlier this season in Sky Bet League 2 – and the move of the match resulted in Graham Cummins’ goal.  Christy Pym launched downfield, Liam Sercombe chested into the path of Matt Grimes, who in turn found the striker – who bent an unstoppable shot into the net.  Click here to watch.

6. Matt Grimes v Accrington (A) – Friday 28th November 2014

For the second consecutive weekend, Exeter came out narrow winners in a five-goal thriller and it was a Matt Grimes free-kick that sealed the deal.  In a game of five stunning strikes, the pick of the efforts was a bending, powerful set-piece from the teenager which nestled in the top corner.  Click here to watch.
