Tis: "We have to be on our guard"

Tis looks ahead to Saturday's long trip to Grimsby.

Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale says the Grecians have to be 'ultra-careful' against Grimsby Town on Saturday.

The Mariners parted company with manager Russel Slade on February 11 after a run of 12 matches without a win, and appointed Paul Wilkinson as caretaker-manager.

Tis was quick to point out that City need to make sure they do not take Grimsby lightly after playing teams in a similar situation earlier in the season. He said: "We’ve played teams twice this year (Port Vale and Chesterfield) who have had a bad run, and a change of manager and lost both.

“If there is ever a warning it is this week. We need to be ultra-careful that we don’t just assume that they are in a bad way. We have to be on our guard.”

City will go into Saturday's match confident after Tuesday night's late turnaround against Crewe Alexandra, as the Grecians battled back from an 88th-minute goal to score two in injury time to win the match.

Tis felt the manner of the win will give the team an extra boost going into the final 14 games of the season. He added: “It’s very good for us, it’s three points for us but it’s more than three points.

“We needed one of those games, we certainly needed one of those games. We’ve not had that type of position, that type of reaction this season that’s created that type of feeling."

The team stayed over after Crewe, which Tis explained helped with recovery management for the players. He said: "We stayed over after Crewe because of the sleep deprivation you get from getting back to Devon at 3am and having to miss sleep before the long trip to Grimsby.

"Sleep and recovery is so important. Its one of the small details you have to look at."

Last season City left Blundell Park with all three points after a commanding 3-0 win. When asked how much he would give for a repeat of that he said: “Every week we are looking for three points. We are a different team from last year, a different set of players and we have to play to our strengths.

“It’s a year ago but seems a long long time ago. We are in the 2017/18 season, we are a group of players that have certain strengths, different to last season and we have to work to them.”
