📝 Match Preview: Sutton United (A)

First match of 2022

31 December 2021

After three long weeks without a match, Exeter City will kick off their 2022 with a first ever trip to the VBS Community Stadium to take on Sutton United.

Following postponements to our matches with Port Vale, Portsmouth, Swindon Town and Forest Green Rovers due to Covid-19 in various camps, this will be the Grecians first match since a 1-0 defeat to Tranmere Rovers on December 11.

Football League newcomers Sutton United have been the surprise package in League Two this season, sitting in the play-off places on Boxing Day. Their last match was a 1-0 win over Harrogate Town at the VBS Community Stadium, locally known as Gander Green Lane.

The South London side have won seven of their nine home league matches this season, losing only to Swindon and Walsall.

Matt Taylor's Thoughts

With the squad suffering the effects of a Covid-19 outbreak and an accumulation of injuries, Taylor only has a select number of players available for the trip, hinting that 'the squad picks itself' for the clash at the VBS Community Stadium.

"It's been a disjointed training group. We had eleven fit outfield players, plus two goalkeepers today," he said.

"It's not been ideal preparation, but we are actually looking forward to playing a game of football.

"There'll be some new faces and new partnerships but we will try and keep the Exeter City ethos. We will put out a team we think can physically cope with the demands of the game.

"It's an opportunity for us and it's the first opportunity of a three-game week.

"There is no pressure on this group of players this weekend."

Our full allocation of tickets is now SOLD OUT, subject to returns.

Due to the VBS Community Stadium's redevelopments, we had been allocated a maximum of 470 tickets in the away stand (Gates 9 & 10)- all of which have now been sold.

There is a small potential there may be a final few tickets available in the coming days, through returns. If this is the case we will provide an update.
