📝 Match Preview: Bolton Wanderers (H)

All you need to know ahead of Tuesday night's fixture

12 January 2021

Exeter City are back in EFL Sky Bet League Two action under the lights on Tuesday night as Bolton Wanderers visit the Park for a 7pm kick-off.

The match is the first meeting of the two sides since 1993 and City will be looking to make up for lost time  as they are three matches behind teams above them in the league due to postponements.

Ahead of the match, City's No.1 Lewis Ward, who returned to action for the first time since October said that despite Bolton's league position the team is weary of the threats they pose.

"Hopefully we can be up to the challenge and deal with what they throw at us tomorrow night. said City's shot-stopper.

City will be playing their first league match since Boxing Day's 1-1 draw

"It's unfortunate they got called off, but you've got to deal with it and we will have to play those on a Tuesday night coming up. Hopefully with Saturday out of the way we can dust the rust off and hit Tuesday night."

"We are in a strong position even though we are four games behind some teams, with those four games in hand it does put pressure on those teams around us."

Bolton's Last Match

Bolton Wanderers 0 Crawley Town 1 | Jan 2, 2021 | EFL Sky Bet League Two

George Francomb's striek was enough for Crawley as they held on in the dying stages to claim all three points against Bolton in League Two.

Previous Encounter

Bolton Wanderers 4 Exeter City 1 | March 20, 1993

Exeter City and Bolton Wanderers were heading in different directions when they last met in March 1993. Bolton were battling for promotion at the top end of the Second Division and managed to pip Port Vale and West Bromwich Albion to the second automatic promotion spot under the guidance of Bruce Rioch. The 4-1 win against Exeter, was part of a run of 15 wins from their final 18 matches that season as they stormed their way from a mid-table position to second.

The Grecians, on the other hand, recorded a memorable double over Plymouth Argyle that season but that was about as good as it got. Under the management of Alan Ball, we finished 19th and suffered second round exits in both the League and FA Cups. Steve Moran scored the only goal for us against Bolton at Burden Park that season, as they stormed to a 4-1 victory.

Head to head

  • Exeter City wins: 3
  • Draws: 3
  • Bolton Wanderers: 5
