📝 Match Preview: Walsall (H)

City back on home turf

1 October 2021

Exeter City are back on home turf this weekend when they take on Walsall at St James Park.

The Grecians returned from the North-East with a point last time out after a 1-1 draw at Hartlepool United and recorded an unbeaten September to register seven games without defeat, conceding just once last month. In their last match at SJP, City ran out 2-0 winners against Sutton United.

The Saddlers - coincidentally also managed by a Matt Taylor - lost 2-1 at Bristol Rovers last time out, which was their second defeat in a row. They currently sit in 22nd place in the League Two table with eight points from nine league matches.

(Our) Matt Taylor's Thoughts

His side come into the game on the back of seven unbeaten matches, but he is wary of the threat of the Midlands side.

"We expect them to be stronger than they have been recenrly and they have some really talented and excited players," he said.

"We are of course excited to be back at home after a long away trip and we'll be looking to put in a good performance on the back of the match here against Sutton.

"We hope to create chances and hurt the opposition, but both teams will be going out there to win it. We also have to be in a position where we can change the game if it not going our way."

One To Watch

Stephen Ward, Full Back

Experienced defender Stephen Ward arrived at the Banks's Stadium this summer. The former Republic of Ireland international began his career at Bohemians before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2007. Ward played at Euro 2012 and 2016 before retiring from international football in 2019.

He made 239 appearances for Wolves and helped them win promotion to the Premier League in 2009. Ward had a loan spell at Brighton & Hove Albion in the 2013-14 season before he left Molineux on a permanent basis to join Burnley. He spent five seasons at Turf Moor but left in 2019 to join Stoke City in the Championship.

This season, the 36-year-old put pen to paper at the Banks’s Stadium and started every game so far, looking fairly solid, despite the Saddlers slow start.
